Fred joins Bethlehem Steel FC as player coach

The former Philadelphia Union midfielder will join Bethlehem Steel FC ahead of their first season.

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran MLS midfielder Fred has found a new opportunity to build upon his already gigantic career today, signing as a player coach for Bethlehem Steel. The native of Belo Horizonte has played for Melbourne Victory, Wellington Phoenix, D.C. United and of course the Philadelphia Union in his 19 year career.

Recapping his time in MLS over seven seasons will probably cause some heads to spin. Fred played 131 games with 92 starts, racking up just north of 8,000 minutes. Fred turned in 16 goals in 18 assists during his time in the American top flight, which is a very respectable number for a holding midfielder.  The veteran will no doubt add experience to the young USL squad, and although I doubt he will be doing much of the playing his knowledge will be second to none in terms of his understanding of the physicality and wear and tear of the American game. We'll see how this all plays out tomorrow, when Fred makes his first appearance of sorts with Bethlehem Steel against Montreal FC.
