Anthony Fontana unleashed a beauty to give the Philadelphia Union Academy a come-from-behind victory over FC Tokyo in their final group match in the Premier Division of the U17 Generation adidas Cup in Frisco, Texas.
After a scoreless first 35 minutes (games are 70 minutes long), the Union fell behind early in the second half but found an equalizer that set up Fontana's dramatic game-winner. The Union Academy Twitter feed did not list a goal-scorer for the equalizer.
Good as the goal was, it wasn't enough to make up the ground needed to advance out of Group C. The Union finished group play with a 1-1-1 record and four points after being eliminated with a 1-0 loss on Monday to Pumas. Pumas and FC Tokyo both advanced.
The Union will still have a chance to play two more matches - opponents and times to be announced - before returning home.
The starting XI for Tuesday's game included Seth Kuhn, Daniel Bloyou and Issa Rayyan at forward, Josue Monge, Omar Ayala and Justin McMaster at midfield, Matthew Real, captain Mark McKenzie, Ben Ofeimu and Isaiah Holquist in defense and Tomas Romero in goal. Brandon Golden, Fontana and Evan Godfrey came off the bench.
