Bethlehem Steel FC closed out the preseason with a high quality 3-0 win over the Georgetown Hoyas. Early on the game was a bit of a feeling out process with admittedly sloppy play and a few offsides and missed chances. The right side of the Steel was a downright nightmare for the Hoyas as Taylor Washington and on again off again loanee Eric Ayuk were connecting well to form a good attack. Eric Ayuk was rewarded for his pacey, incisive play with an assist when he found Jamaican striker Amoy Brown for the Steel's first goal of the contest.
Philadelphia Union signing Walter Restrepo also showed what he was capable of on the pitch in front of a sizable crowd that included the Union coaching staff and general manager Earnie Stewart. He started to really work down the left side of the field. Restrepo also notched an assist for himself on a corner when Ryan Richter jumped up and found the net to make it 2-0 to Steel at the half.
Brendan Burke's side showed one of their best efforts of the preseason in the second half. The midfield trio of James Chambers, Bolu Akinyode and Derrick Jones started to turn any chance of a Georgetown comeback into a pipe dream. Speaking of Derrick Jones, the Union Academy project and first BSFC signing turned in a great goal, taking the through ball just past the GU keeper to slot home the third and final goal of the match.
This team looks ready for FC Montreal next week away. The second half was a clinic in possession and how to hold a team in their defensive third. Ryan Richter captained a great Steel back line and they managed to shut out another college team at "home" and a lot of the hype around the USL veterans of Mickey Daly and Samir Badr has been warranted.
Bethlehem Steel FC opens the season away against FC Montreal next Friday, March 25 at 7:00 PM.
