I asked the staff here at The Brotherly Game for some predictions about the Philadelphia Union's upcoming season. It's been a fascinating off-season that has seen the team rebuilt almost from the ground up. What will the Union be able to do with this new talent? Let's see.
Playoff Predictions
Heather Reppert: The Union make the playoffs, but are knocked out in the first round.
Evan Villella: .500 team, sneak in the playoffs, first round loss to the New York Red Bulls
Andrew Stoltzfus: Be relevant into the last few weeks of the season. Not expecting playoffs though.
Barry Evans: A last day loss puts us out of the playoffs.
Doug Gobrecht: The Union will miss the playoffs on the last game of the season, by one point.
Colin Campbell: No different than last year, (but they will) have a slightly better goal differential.
Jared Young: Union will not make the playoffs. The defense is young(er) and offense didn't upgrade their ability to score.
Justin F.: Qualify for MLS Cup Playoffs.
U.S. Open Cup Predictions
Drew Gobrecht: The Union lose in the US Open Cup Final.
Chuck Booth: The Union finally win a (open cup) trophy!!
Andrew Stoltzfus: Knocked out by lower league team in Open Cup.
Justin F.: The Union flounder in US Open Cup.
Barry Evans: (The Union) will get knocked out by first MLS team (they) play.
Miscellaneous Predictions
John Rossi: CJ Sapong breaks the Union's single-season scoring record.
Matt Rogers: Tranquillo Barnetta will lead the team in combined goals & assists.
Matt Ralph: Herbers will score a goal. Everyone will love him for a week and then forget about him.
Matt Albaugh: The Union have a top 5 draft pick again.
As for me, I think the Union will make the playoffs but will fall short of the MLS Cup and will get beaten in an early stage of the U.S. Open Cup. I think that Andre Blake is going to have a breakout year not only for the Union but for Jamaica as well, and he may very well be an MLS All-Star come July.
