Sebastian Elney will get a chance to face the team he could wind up signing a homegrown player contract with when Maryland plays the Philadelphia Union in an exhibition match on April 12.
The match, which will be played at 10 a.m. on the training grounds outside Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, is one of four head coach Sasho Cirovski has scheduled against professional teams.
The 2015 Big Ten Tournament Champions start their spring schedule with a trip to play New York Red Bulls II in East Hanover, N.J., on March 6 and then visit Columbus Crew SC on March 25 before the Tuesday morning date with the Union. They also play D.C. United away on April 19 and host Temple in College Park on Saturday, April 23.
Elney, a Boca Raton, Florida native who played for the Union Academy U18 team in the 2014-15 season, led the Terps in goals with 7 in his first season in College Park in the fall, earning Second Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.
Maryland is one of three college programs with ties to the Union Academy that will be playing in Chester this spring. Morgan Hackworth, Chris Gomez, Kenny Lassiter and Syracuse play Bethlehem Steel FC in Chester on March 6 and Brett Campbell and Georgetown take on Steel FC on March 20.
