Bethlehem Steel FC signs Hugh Roberts

Bethlehem gives everyone a Christmas gift by signing a very promising center back

Bethlehem Steel FC have announced the signing of Hugh Roberts for the 2017 season. Joining from Richmond Kickers in the USL, the All-League First Team center back put together 30 games with 2700 minutes and will definitely aid an otherwise troubled center back position for Bethlehem Steel FC. Previously, Roberts played for George Mason University where he took home all A-10 Tournament Honors in 2013. He also played for the Baltimore Bohemians, where he was named to the PDL’s All-Eastern Conference team in the same year.

One of the pieces of the puzzle that wasn’t always in place for Steel FC was center back. Mickey Daly, Nick Bibbs and Auston Trusty were the three best players at CB, with Daly leaving for NASL’s Carolina RailHawks/North Carolina FC in the middle of last year. Bibbs was released at the end of the season, and so another solid option was gone. With the recent capture of Roberts and the emergence of Auston Trusty as a legitimate USL starter/MNT player, it’s probably safe to say that these two will be the starting pair for the majority of the 2017 season. Hopefully Roberts’ experience will help Steel FC win some games as well as developing the younger players that are around and in the system this year.
