The eighth time was a charm for West Chester Henderson’s seniors on Saturday as they finally got the better of Conestoga in the District 1 Class 4A final at Great Valley High School.

Frank DeRosa opened the scoring in the 11th minute for Henderson, which had outscored opponents 12-1 entering the District title match on Saturday, and kept forcing the issue, eventually finding a second goal by Zach Roberts in the 40th minute.

Senior captain Maxwell Zandi, who had an assist on the second goal, and the defense did the rest to shut down Conestoga’s potent attack and set off a celebration at the final whistle with the crowded student section near the bench.

Henderson will play Cumberland Valley in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday at Downingtown West High School at 7 p.m. while Conestoga will face Parkland in the 5 p.m. game.

North Penn will play La Salle in Northeast Philly, Council Rock North will face Emmaus in Allentown, and Neshaminy takes on Hempfield at Manheim Township High School in the other first round state tournament matches featuring teams from the region on Tuesday.

Radnor came from behind edge top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep 2-1 in overtime and capture the District 1 Class 3A championship on Saturday night at Great Valley High School.

Holy Ghost took the lead in the 44th minute through Ryan French, but a controversial play on a 50-50 ball near the penalty spot would lead to a Phil Regan equalizer that would eventually send the game to overtime.

A Jack Miller steal started a counter-attack that set up Andrew Boujoukos’ trophy-winning tally in the 93rd minute.

Radnor will next face Fleetwood at Hatboro Horsham High School in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday while Holy Ghost Prep travels to Hershey to face unbeaten and nationally-ranked Lower Dauphin. District 12 winners Archbishop Wood host Gettysburg in the other Tuesday match with local significance.

In other action over the weekend, Lansdale Catholic beat Lower Moreland in the District 1/12 Class 2A regional final at Council Rock North.

Lansdale Catholic will play Biglerville in Philadelphia on Tuesday and Lower Moreland has Tulpehocken at Hamburg Area High School on Tuesday.

District 1 Class A champs Faith Christian will face District 12 champs Masterman at Souderton High School on Tuesday in the first round of Class A state tournament.
