At the beginning of the broadcast of the Philadelphia Union vs. New York Red Bulls match, MSG Network announcer Shep Messing disclosed that the Union captain, central defensive midfielder, and sometimes center back Maurice Edu will miss the remainder of the season with a leg fracture. This is an absolutely awful development for Edu, who battled to rehab stress fractures of his tibia for the majority of the season and after a stint with Bethlehem Steel FC looked poised to rejoin the Union lineup in time for the playoffs.
It wasn’t disclosed which leg was fractured, or if it was related to the stress fracture he had worked so hard to rehab. The Union tweeted out a photo that showed Alejandro Bedoya’s captain’s armband had a number 8 on it in honor and support of the injured Edu.

We will work to find out more information and will pass it along as it becomes available.
Update: From the Union’s post-match press conference, Philadelphia Union manager Jim Curtin said that it was Edu’s fibula that broke when his studs got stuck in the grass during training.
