Senior captain Matt Mahoney got on the end of Belal Mohamed and did well to settle it and put it in the back of the net in the 78th minute to lift the Owls to a 2-1 win over Delaware in their final non-conference test of the season.
The goal was the first of the season for the right back from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and the third of his career.
As they have so often this season at home, the Owls (9-5-1) came out sharp with a couple of early chances that led to Jorge Gomez Sanchez’s 13th goal of the season in the 10th minute off an assist from Albert Moreno.
Minutes later, Gomez Sanchez appeared to have doubled the lead but the goal was waived off with a tardy whistle from the referee. Gomez Sanchez also had a penalty appeal in the first half that further frustrated the home crowd of close to 500 at the Tuesday afternoon match.
Fortunate to only be down a goal going into the break with their star forward Guillermo Delgado out of the lineup, the Blue Hens (9-5-1) found an equalizer less than two minutes into the second half when Arno Masson-Viale found Fede Prieto on a cross off a short corner. Prieto, a freshman from Spain, was able to bury the chance through traffic for his seventh of the season.
Tuvesson lifts Lehigh to win with late goal
Philadelphia Union Academy grad Doyle Tuvesson scored with six minutes remaining to lift Lehigh to a 2-1 win over Fordham on Tuesday.
The goal was the second of the season for the sophomore, who leads the team with four assists. Freshman Zarin Tuten opened the scoring for the Mountain Hawks (5-8-1) in the 16th minute, but Janos Loebe equalized 10 minutes later.
Goalkeeper Will Smith (Devon, Pa.) made three saves in goal for Lehigh in his sixth start.
