Fresh off a strong performance in the Philadelphia Union U16 team’s 2-2 draw against New York City FC on Monday, goalkeeper Tomas Romero is heading to San Jose, Costa Rica to rejoin the El Salvador U17 team.

El Salvador will play Costa Rica on Thursday and Saturday and then travel to Panama for games on October 18 and 20 in preparation for Central America qualifying matches in Costa Rica next month.

Three teams out of six will advance out of Central America qualifying to the CONCACAF U17 Championship in Panama in April. The U.S., Mexico, Canada and host Panama have received automatic berths. CONCACAF will get four bids to the U17 World Cup in India next fall.

Romero, 15, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was last with the team for a training camp in August 2016. LA Galaxy U16 forward Christian Gomez and Rodrigo Santamaria, who has spent time with the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy, are also on the squad for the friendlies.

In addition to his time playing for Union Academy teams, Romero has also trained with and made the bench twice for Bethlehem Steel FC in their inaugural season.
