Derek MacKinnon broke a 1-1 tie in the 59th minute with a goal set up by Matt Crawford’s free kick to lead the Hawks to their third straight victory to open Atlantic 10 play.
It was the second straight match-winner for MacKinnon (Washington Township, N.J.) and came after the Hawks and George Mason traded first-half goals.
Mori Diane’s goal in the 23rd minute off an assist from Mike Stuski (Holland, Pa.) opened the scoring but Cullen Hunter headed home a corner from Henning Dirks to tie things up less than eight minutes later.
The Hawks improved to 6-5-1 with the victory and have started off their conference schedule with three straight wins for the first time since 2007. Crawford (Bensalem, Pa.) registered his third assist for the year to go with seven goals and has a goal or an assist in all six of St. Joe’s wins.
La Salle beats Rhode Island to even conference record
Jonny Ciarlante (Southampton, Pa.) and Tony Daniele (West Chester, Pa.) scored and the defense held off a late rally by Rhode Island to lead the Explorers to their first Atlantic 10 win of the season on Saturday.
Ciarlante scored his third goal of the season just six minutes in off a play started by a Zach Rutherford throw-in that was tipped by Greg Henry. Daniele doubled the advantage after the break with a free kick goal in the 59th minute, but Rhode Island didn’t go away quietly.
Stavros Zarokostas cut the lead in half in the 75th minute, heading home a Dominik Richter corner to get the visitors back in it but the Explorers defense held on to even the team’s conference record at 1-1-0 and overall record at 6-5-0.
Penn fall on penalty kick in double overtime
Penn was seconds away from walking away with their sixth draw of the season when a foul was whistled in the box against the Quakers in the closing seconds of the second overtime period against Columbia in West Philly on Saturday night.
Unfortunately for the home fans, John Denis converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Columbia the late win in an overtime scenario that is becoming commonplace for the Quakers (3-2-5).
Out of 10 games so far this season, Penn has gone to overtime eight times. Saturday’s loss was their first in extra periods after picking up a pair of wins and five draws in their other overtime contests.
Columbia took an early lead in the match on an Arthur Bosua strike in the 15th minute but Alec Neumann (New Hope, Pa.) added to his team-leading goal haul with his seventh of the year in the 50th minute off an assist from Sam Wancowicz.
Lehigh, Lafayette lose
Philadelphia Union Academy grad Doyle Tuvesson scored on a late penalty kick and freshman goalkeeper Will Smith (Devon, Pa.) made a career-high eight saves but other than that it was all Army in a 4-1 win over the Mountain Hawks (4-7-1) on Saturday.
Lafayette (6-6-0) also fell on Saturday, 3-0 to American at home. The loss snapped the Leopards’ three-game winning streak and was the sixth time this season they’ve been shut out.
