Philadelphia Union acquire Fabian Herbers with sixth pick in 2016 MLS SuperDraft

With the sixth pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, the Philadelphia Union select forward/midfielder Fabian Herbers out of Creighton University.

The Philadelphia Union have selected Fabian Herbers, a forward/midfielder out of Creighton, with the sixth overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. The 6'0" German national was a MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist and set a Creighton record with 17 assists in 2015. In his three year career with Creighton, he played in 62 total matches, scoring 28 goals and 27 assists.

Herbers can probably play anywhere in the front four, with his best position being a true forward. He will most likely be depth behind CJ Sapong and Tranquillo Barnetta, who may be called to spot start in the event of injuries or suspension. Other than that, look for him perhaps pick up a few starts with Bethlehem Steel FC.

Herbers played youth soccer with FC Twente in the Netherlands and Preussen Munster in Germany. He also played amateur soccer with Vfl Rhede in the German Oberliga Niederrhein before coming to the United States to attend college.
