Just as Andre Blake was starting to get settled in to the rhythm of life as the Philadelphia Union's number one goalkeeper, duty calls. Jamaica is hosting Nicaragua this evening at Independence Park in Kingston. This is the first leg of the Third Round of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. The home-and-away against Los Pinoleros will see the Reggae Boyz head to Managua on Tuesday.
It's unclear if Blake will even play. When Jamaica went on a fantastic run that saw them lose to Mexico in the Gold Cup Final at Lincoln Financial Field back in July, Blake was the third string goalkeeper. Starter Dwayne Miller of Sweden's Syrianska was forced out of the competition when he suffered a head injury against El Salvador, and backup goalkeeper Ryan Thompson of the USL Pittsburgh Riverhounds performed admirably. That being said, Blake was regarded as the goalkeeper of the future for Jamaica, backstopping them to the 2014 Caribbean Cup Championship and winning the Golden Gloves Award for the best goalkeeper in the tournament.
