In Memoriam: Sheanon Williams

Emerging in late 2010 in an acquisition from the Harrisburg City Islanders, Sheanon Williams has been the Union's first choice right back since, and nothing much has changed until this year. In what had been an effective rotation of Ray Gaddis, Fabinho, and Williams, the Union's usual woes at fullback were put on hiatus as the three interchanged with little to no signs of diminished returns.

It wasn't until earlier this season that Williams would be considered disposable when Union boss Jim Curtin declared Ray Gaddis as his first choice right back over Williams. The move was questioned by many and it appeared Williams' days in a Philadelphia Union kit were numbered.

Williams has stuck through thick and thin as a member of this team. Between all the highs and lows of the franchise over the recent years, Williams was always the constant. His marauding ways up the right side of the field were feared, as were his devastating long throw-ins. He may never have been considered an All-Star, nor even the best right back in the league (although he was high on my list), but Williams brought a certain attitude with his play that could bring out the best in his abilities.

The questions will remain about the offense going forward, given Curtin's use of the fullbacks to lead the attack. Gaddis is incomparable to Williams in that regard and has big shoes to step into. Williams arguably delivered the best ball into the box on the pitch at any given point which showed greatly in 2013 season when he amassed 8 assists in 32 matches. There is no argument that his offensive talents existed and will be sorely missed.

Williams travels to Houston Dynamo and we can't say enough about what he meant to this team. Best of luck to you in your new endeavors, Sheanon (except for when you play the Union later and in that case I hope you lose, but that's the only time). I'll still yell BOOM whenever you take a throw-in.
