Jurgen Klinsmann Announces USMNT 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup Roster

Klinsmann has whittled the United States' 35-man roster down to a 23-man roster as the USMNT begin their quest to the Final at Lincoln Financial Field.

USMNT manager Jürgen Klinsmann released the final 23-man roster for this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup. This roster is classic Klinsmann in that many of the selections make sense, while a few of the decisions leave you scratching your head.

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), William Yarbrough (Club Leon)

Defenders: Ventura Alvarado (Club America), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (L.A. Galaxy), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach), Tim Ream (Bolton Wanderers)

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (FC Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (NYCFC), Alfredo Morales (Ingolstadt), DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur), Gyasi Zardes (L.A. Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Notable Additions: Right off the bat the addition of Tim Ream and Brad Evans strike me as a bit of a surprise, especially when you consider the pool of available players. Chris Wondolowski may be a surprise to some, especially with Jordan Morris performing so well, but Wondolowski has eight goals this season in addition to bringing a veteran presence to the team.

Notable Exclusions: Let's just say I'm more surprised at who was left off than who was included. Klinsmann made some interesting choices with his full backs, leaving DaMarcus Beasley, Greg Garza and Brek Shea off the roster therefore depriving the team of any left backs outside of Fabian Johnson and Timmy Chandler (who are both right-footed). The U.S. is not known for their defense and this squad does not address those issues. Also excluded, from the USMNT, the entire Philadelphia Union roster. In fact, the only player on the Union roster to make a Gold Cup roster is the currently injured goalkeeper Andre Blake made Jamaica's 23-man roster.

Overall, a solid roster for the USMNT, but as always the defense will be a huge question mark throughout the tournament. The Gold Cup kicks off for the USMNT July 7th against Honduras and the Final and 3rd Place game taking place in Philadelphia and Chester respectively.
