Zach Pfeffer Called Up for U-23 Match vs Denmark

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Union midfielder Zach Pfeffer has been called up to the United States U-23 squad ahead of their match against Denmark on Tuesday. This marks the first international call-up for Pfeffer since missing the U-20 championships with a sprained MCL. Despite missing the tournament, Pfeffer worked hard in the pre-season and earned a starting spot in the Union's match against FC Dallas.

Pfeffer is currently serving a two-match suspension for an elbow to FC Dallas’ Mauro Diaz, but was loaned to Harrisburg City Islanders over the weekend. He was able to score once in the team’s 5-2 defeat to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

This call-up marks the first time that Pfeffer has been called up to Andreas Herzog’s U-23 squad, having spent his time with the U-20 squad as of late. Pfeffer will join fellow MLS players such as Vancouver’s Christian Dean, Real Salt Lake’s Luis Gil and NYCFC’s first round pick Khiry Shelton.

The match against Demark will take place at Lyngby Stadion in Copenhagen at 2 pm EST and the U-23 will be off until they take on Mexico April 22nd at the StubHub Center.
