The 26 year old joined the Philadelphia Union in 2012 from Finnish Ykkönen (second division) side Koo Tee Pee, and spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Union before being released after training camp earlier this year. Wheeler is probably best known for former Union manager John Hackworth asking him to play center back, which while ultimately was disastrous did earn him a spot on the MLS Best XI for Week 4. He also contributed a goal and an assist in his twenty-five appearances for the Union. After Hackworth was fired, Wheeler was sent to Harrisburg, playing in three games and scoring a goal.
With Wheeler joining the Hammerheads, he'll be reunited with his old teammate Corben Bone, as well as Union alumnus Nick Zimmermann as a player whose career path went from Chester to Wilmington.
