The Philadelphia Union's preseason ends tonight. Win or lose, the time in sunny Florida is just about up. All that's left to do for the club is the beat the Red Bulls and bring home a trophy.
Sure, it's just a preseason trophy. It's not the MLS Cup nor the US Open Cup. It's not even the I-95 Cup. But it's something more than the club has right now at the first team level (the club did win the 2012 Generation adidas Cup, but that's an Under 17 tournament). And it's against the Red Bulls.
It will be interesting to see who the Union start in goal this evening. New signee John McCarthy has taken most of the minutes this preseason, however the club may decide to go with Rais M'Bolhi as he is projected to be the club's starter on opening day - whenever that is. The rest of the lineup will probably be the same as it has been for the majority of the preseason: A back four of Raymon Gaddis, Steven Vitoria, Ethan White, and Sheanon Williams. In front of them, Maurice Edu and Vincent Nogueira, although Nogueira has missed time with a slight injury. If he can't go, look for Zach Pfeffer to play in his place. The wings will probably be Andrew Wenger on the left and Sebastien Le Toux on the right with Cristian Maidana in the attacking midfielder role and newcomer Fernando Aristeguieta up top. Since his arrival, Aristeguieta has three goals for the Union in just two appearances.
