Leo Fernandes is one of the few players currently on the Philadelphia Union's official roster, but there was uncertainty about the exact plans for the young attacking midfielder. After a strong 2015 with the New York Cosmos where Fernandes scored eight goals and added three assists, there was interest from the Cosmos in retaining the NASL Young Player of the Year. According to an interview with the Cosmos Country Podcast, Cosmos coach Leo Savarese said that Fernandes would most likely be back with Philadelphia next season.
"We definitely had conversations with Philadelphia in order to converse and figure out if there might any opportunities for us to bring him in, but at the moment everything seems to be heading in the direction of Leo going back to Philadelphia," said Savarese.
While the continued development of Fernandes is intriguing for Union fans, attacking midfield is the only area where the Union have what could be considered depth. Currently the Union have Chris Pontius, Tranquillo Barnetta, Sebastien Le Toux and Eric Ayuk alongside Fernandes, with perhaps more signing to come.
