In a joint press release, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL announced the match schedule for the highly anticipated Copa America Centenario, being played from June 3rd to June 26th next summer in the United States. Speculation that the tournament would appear here in Philadelphia ended in October when the city was named one of ten host cities for the 100th anniversary of South America's premier international tournament. In even more exciting news, at least for those of us here in Philadelphia and the tri-state area, the United States' men's national soccer team will play one of their group stage matches in the City of Brotherly Love at Lincoln Financial Field.
The United States will play their three group matches at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara (June 3rd), Soldier Field in Chicago (June 7th), and finally at the Linc (June 11th). Mark your calendars for that one, folks. Opponents for these matches are yet to be determined, but the United States was announced as a seeded team in this tournament along with the five-time World Cup winners Brazil, the two-time World Cup winners Argentina, and CONCACAF arch rival Mexico. They will be the seeded teams out of group B, D, and C respectively.
Lincoln Financial Field will also play host to two other matches, on June 9 and June 14. The opponents for these are as of yet undetermined, however they will not feature the United States, Mexico, Argentina, or Brazil.
Copa America Centenario will feature 16 teams from the FIFA confederations CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, with all 10 CONMEBOL sides featuring. This celebratory tournament will be hosted outside of South America for the first time in the tournament's history. It will be the first major inter-confederation tournament in the United States since the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
All other information, including the schedule of matches, will be available on Copa America Centenario's newly launched website. Sign up for more information there, like ticketing information among other things.
