After announcing a corporate re-brand earlier in 2015, Talen Energy (formerly known as PPL Energy Plus) has "assumed the naming rights" to the Philadelphia Union's home stadium, PPL Park. The news was broken here on Brotherly Game this morning, and it was officially announced this afternoon that the riverside stadium would now be called Talen Energy Stadium. While fans had hoped the stadium would have a name more relevant to the team or area ("The Commodore" was one name popular among Brotherly Game staff), Talen Energy sought to have it named after the company as it was with PPL.
Dave Rowan of the Philadelphia Union said via press release, "We look forward to continuing a strategic and great partnership with Talen Energy and are truly excited for the stadium to have a new look come 2016. While the name will be changing, we remain solely devoted to bringing our loyal fans the best possible game-day experience and we welcome this change as a re-commitment to our values." Talen is eager to rename the stadium and continue the partnership with the Union, starting as PPL Energy back in 2010. "Talen Energy is proud to partner with the Philadelphia Union to show fans that we are the energy provider of choice for residential, small business and large commercial customers throughout the region, we look forward to the 2016 season and continued opportunities to be a strong presence in the community." said Talen Energy’s Vice President of Retail Marketing, Joel Cook.
