With the 20th pick in the second round, the Union went with midfielder Eric Bird, a senior captain of the Cavaliers.
A native of Virginia Beach, Bird featured in 19 UVA games this season, starting 17 of them for the NCAA champions.. He finished with five goals and two assists, leading the team in goals and points en route to being named First Team All-ACC. In his career, Bird tallied 15 goals and 10 assists, totaling 40 points. Just a season ago, he earned a spot on the Third Team All-America team, as well as the NSCAA First Team All-South Atlantic Region.
Bird was continuously projected to go much higher in the draft, with a Bleacher Report mock draft having him go 15th overall, so this is a great pick for the Union having the midfielder fall to them at the 41st pick of the draft. As a crafty midfielder, he is known to traditionally sit deeper in the midfield, and dictate the play whenever he is on the field. It remains to be seen whether or not his skills will translate into the pros.
