Attacking midfielder Zach Pfeffer has been added to the league's 20-man roster that will take part in MLS's inaugural Homegrown Player Game, sponsored by Chipotle (and the approval of my taste buds). The HGPs will take on Portland Timbers U23s on Monday, August 4th at 10 PM Eastern. Pfeffer will be the lone Union representative during MLS All-Star Weekend.
In a statement released by the Union, the 19 year old Dresher, PA relished the opportunity, "I'm very excited and honored to be selected as part of the Chipotle Homegrown team and excied to represent the Union as well as the other great Homegrown players around the League," Pfeffer said.
The late addition comes as a result of Seattle star fullback DeAndre Yedlin choosing to play in the MLS All-Star Game, and Montreal's Karl Ouimette and Wandrille Lefevre withdrawing from the Homegrown Game to join the Impact for their scheduled August 5th CONCACAF Champions League match against Salvadoran side CD FAS. Joining Pfeffer will be Carlos Salcedo from Real Salt Lake and Danny Garcia from FC Dallas.
Pfeffer has just returned from a successful stint in California with the U-20 United States national team. In 3 matches Pfeffer scored 2 goals and notched an assist, but came off after only 8 minutes of the final match due to a minor injury. He has made 4 appearances for the Union this season, including one start.
