Philadelphia Union fans might know Andrew Wenger more than Montreal Impact fans, since the first round pick overall in the 2012 MLS Draft, is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Drafted by Jesse Marsch, the versatile player could have played either as a striker or defender.
Marsch made it clear that he was drafted as a forward, and he played Wenger as one. Andrew is not known for his finishing quality, but has good soccer sense to make the smart runs and find himself in dangerous scoring positions.
Unfortunately the stigma of not-scoring has caught up to him, and has barely played under Marco Schällibaum in 2013. As a player, he can play on the wings as he has speed and decent passing skills. But at the end if he plays as a striker, he would a pivot striker that other forwards and midfielders can play around.
He is not the most technical player as his ball control is average, hindering his role as a pivot striker. But he has upped his physicality and confidence to another level in 2014, although probably not enough for Frank Klopas.
In the end, the Union get a player who has enough skills and a good soccer IQ to be a successful MLS player. Will he be a Will Bruin? Maybe not.
