2014 Union Depth Chart - Defensive Midfielders

With the addition of Maurice Edu, the Union made a statement this off season. And while the statement that the club was willing to spend money to bring in top talent was a big one, let's not overlook the fact that Edu now gives us multiple world-class options at Defensive Midfielder.

Defensive Midfielder

Maurice Edu (Transfer from Stoke City)

All the hype and stories around the draft were about the Union signing Edu. He instantly became the biggest name player to actually be a Union starter (Kleberson didn't really "play" for the Union). If the first couple of preseason games are an indication, Edu will be playing alongside Carroll in the middle. But unlike Carroll, he will also be more of a threat going forward, and should chip in with some goals.

Brian Carroll

Carroll will likely start alongside Edu in defensive midfield, and will basically sit in front of the defense mopping up counter-attacks. Having Edu and likely Noguiera in the center with him will take off any pressure to get forward and create, which is his big weakness. Depending on game situations, will likely be first sacrificed for a more attacking player so is second on the "depth chart".

Michael Lahoud

The Sierra Leone international had a difficult season with injuries, but if he makes the cut and is in the squad, DM is the position he will get minutes at backing up either Edu or Carroll. Can be a disruptive player for the other team in midfield, and has a cool head on the ball.

The Future

Andrew Herr (Redshirt Freshman at Michigan State) (HGP Eligible)

Andrew Herr was a stalwart in the midfield for a Michigan State team that lost to title winners Notre Dame in the elite 8. He started every game for the Spartans and rarely subbed off playing in the midifled slot in front of recent Union draftee Kevin Cope.
