Today the Union announced the signing of attacking midfielder Cristian "Chaco" Maidana, a 26 year-old midfielder from Argentina. Chaco has played professionally since he was 19 in the 2006-2007 season. He started his career with Club Atlético Banfield located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He spent the next three years playing for FC Spartak Moscow, a Russian club which made an appearance in the UEFA Champions League during his final season with the club. He was loaned out to Recreativo de Huelva in the Spanish Segunda División for the 2009 season and to Club Atlético Huracán in Argentina for 2011. From there he moved to Chile's Rangers de Talca, who loaned him to Club de Fútbol Atlante in Mexico, and then to Argentina Juniors.
Clearly, Maidana has bounced around a lot in his career, hopefully he will settle here and have a positive impact with the Union. The Union have been in need of a creative attacking midfield over the offseason since the departure of Roger Torres. Coach John Hackworth had this to say about Maidana: "I was able to see Cristian play several times and I came away extremely impressed with his technical skills, creativity and one vs. one ability."
Chaco is on Twitter, follow him here and welcome him to the club. Below is a highlight video from YouTube from his career.
