MLS SuperDraft 2013: Supplemental Draft Has Some Interesting Prospects

The Supplemental Draft has provided the Philadelphia Union with quality depth in the past, and this year's edition has some names that could potentially be even more influential than any previous selection.

Antoine Hoppenot has set the bar for Supplemental picks for the Union after he performed at a high level as a back up striker and a super sub. The former Princeton University star made 25 appearances for Philadelphia in 2012 and scored four times while torturing tired defenses late in games.

The Union have four picks in the draft, the 12th overall, 17th overall, 24th overall (second round), 43th overall (third round) and the 62nd overall pick (fourth round).

Today's draft has players in it who could give similar results as backups or bench players in their first season. The following is a list of available draft picks that fill needs, or are simply good college players, for the Union:

• Eric Schonele (Center Back, West Virginia) - Most mock drafts had him getting picked in the mid-to-late second round of the SuperDraft, but he fell into the Supplemental Draft and most likely will go pretty high in the first round of it. He was considered one of the top center backs in this draft class by Top Drawer Soccer.
• Jose Gomez (Attacking Midfielder, Creighton) - If you talk to Travis M. Clark, of Top Drawer Soccer, he'd tell you that Gomez was the best attacking player in this draft. Somehow, Gomez's stock fell so much that he wasn't even a SuperDraft selection. Just based on bang for your buck, Gomez should be one of the first players taken. The Union would do well if they picked him up.
• John Gallagher (Left Back, Penn State) - Athletic, attacking and strong on set pieces. The Union may have signed Damani Richards and drafted Dan Anding, but there's no harm in drafting Gallager to see how he plays in the team's preseason camp.
