This past Sunday, USWNT Head Coach Pia Sundhage announced the 18 players she will be bringing with her to London to compete in this Summer's Olympic games in London. Eleven of the players named to the Olympic squad also competed in the 2011 World Cup in Beijing. Three players named to the squad, Shannon Boxx, Heather O'Reilly and Heather Mitts, are each returning for their third Olympic games. Making a bit of History, US Captain Christie Rampone will play in her record setting fourth summer games.
Out of the 18 players chosen to compete, six are playing in their first ever summer games. Kelly O'Hara, Amy LePeilbet, Becky Sauerbrunn, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Sydey Leroux will all be making their first ever Olympic appearances. Leroux meanwhile, is the only player to not have been on the World Cup squad in China and be playing on the 2012 Olympic Squad.
The USWNT will open play two days before the Olympic opening ceremonies, going up against France in the first game of Group G. Their second match will come on July 28th against Columbia, before completing group play against Korea DPR at legendary Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United on July 31st.
