I'm almost certain, and i know i was, that every Union fan was upset upon hearing the news that the Union had sent future star, Jack Mac, to Montreal Impact for another young future star, Andrew Wenger. Jack, who had 12 goals out of 30 Shots on Goal in 31 games played, he's certainly a key player for the Union. Wenger, last season, had considerably less going 8 for 8 for Shots on Goal. Yeah, that's a lot less. Now we have other guys like Le Toux and Connor Casey, but Wenger had less than half of the Goals Mac had last season (and the 2012 season as well) and he's THREE years older. Three. Young age and good skill is always the key to present and future success of not only Soccer clubs, but all professional sports teams as well. Le Toux is currently the leading scorer on the Union but he's entering his age thirty season. He can still get the job done, though.
Last season, the Impact made a playoff run, but did not make it far. They were eliminated by Houston in the Knock Out round, 3-0. They just made the playoffs, however. They finished last season 14-13 with 49 points, JUST making the cut. The Union went 12-12 with 46 points, finishing two spots below Montreal in the standings.
But the real question is: Could the Union have had a successful playoff run in the future, with Jack Mac? Looking back and studying last year's scoring statistics for Jack and Le Toux shows that they are arguably the greatest players in Union history. Sébastian Le Toux has 136 career goals, most of which were scored as a member of the Union. Jack is only 21 and has 25 goals. 25 in four seasons and he's 21. If he keeps up with goal production, and ever increase it every year, he could end up with 200+ goals by the times he's in his late 30s. Last year was a close bid for the Union and I feel another run coming soon. I can also see Wenger as a future star in Philly, but for the Union, the future is now. Being so close to the playoffs, I feel that they will give him enough time and chances to aid in their hopeful run this season. The thing is, now the Impact will most likely perform better after acquiring Jack Mac who scored a hell of a lot more than Wenger did last year.
Overall, do I think that Jack Mac could have taken Philly to the Cup playoffs this year? Yes. Do I think Wenger can also play the role of Mac? Yes. Not now but in the future.
