Like many of the readers on this page my answer is, No. I do not believe the Union need a mascot. The Sons of Ben have been providing a great service to the team. The organization prides itself as being one of the most entertaining supporters groups in the MLS. Having said that, I have mentioned to both the leadership of the Sons of Ben and the Union marketing dept a new idea for a goal celebration. Both organizations expressed interest in the idea and would consider it.
I have read prior posts of readers getting upset at the Union for attempting to force a new tradition on the fan base.
For this reason, I wish to share the idea of a new goal celebration. This past summer my brother Rob (a founding member of the sons of Ben) and I were watching a game together and he shared with me this idea. He envisioned a Benjamin Franklin sitting at an old desk holding a quill pen. Mr. Franklin would be down at the river end of the stadium. After a Union goal was scored and the DOOP! song finished. Mr Franklin would get out an old fashion piece of paper and use the quill pen to write out a proclamation of the Goal. The player's name, time of goal, and the opposition's team name. When he finished, he would then hold it up and show it to the Sons of Ben and the rest of the stadium. Mr. Franklin would then roll the proclamation up and seal it with the wax seals of the union crest and the Sons of Ben logos.
I believe Mr. Franklin could react to some of the run of play action as well. Maybe bang his cane against the floor of his platform, if a foul is committed. I do not wish to force this idea on anyone. I just want it to be truly considered an option maybe even for just one game or maybe it could become a true tradition. My brother unexpectedly passed away in August. I think this goal celebration could be a really cool legacy.
