Rumor: Newcastle United And Union Discussing Summer Friendly

The Philadelphia Union are working on solidifying their 2012 friendly schedule by talking to Newcastle United about playing in Philadelphia during the summer, according to a report.

"I Wish I Was A Geordie," an American Newcastle blog, is reporting that Newcastle and the Union are discussing the two clubs playing an international friendly this year.

The game could possibly beplayed during the Union's scheduling open window from May 27 to June 15 (Philadelphia plays Toronto FC on May 26 and D.C. United on June 16). However, the typical training period for Premier League teams begins a month later, in July.

Philadelphia already has a friendly scheduled against Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa sometime this year.

Newcastle visited the United States last year, playing Sporting Kansas City, Columbus Crew and Orlando City Lions that July. This season the English club appears to be looking for cities within closer proximity to cut down on travel time and distance.

Last year the Union hosted Everton, another English Premier League club, at PPL Park, and played La Liga giants Real Madrid at Lincoln Financial Field.

In the team's inaugural 2010 season, Philadelphia played both Celtic, one of the two dominant teams in Scotland, and Chivas de Guadalajara, a Mexican top league side, at PPL Park, and English Premier League defending champion Manchester United at the Linc.

I've been saying...

Demba Ba’s form has been world-class, even if he couldn’t keep West Ham up. Probably the last EPL striker you want to see on the ball right now. I’d gladly pay to watch this kid play.

Dempsey is more in form than him.

Ba a very, very close second.

Maybe, but...

Dempsey has been mopping up his share of garbage.

Cool

Finally some good news. Fun team to watch too.

I wonder about the date mentioned in the article though as that doesn’t correspond with the EPL training window for next season. I would think it would have to be late July or early August.

oh Joy.....

another money grab by the U that they will NOT put back into the team….

money to pave the parking lot as promised..nope
money to invest in proper youth setup.. nope
money to invest in a proper practice facility.. nope
money to pay for exceeding the cap by utilizing the designated player rules..nope
money to line the owner’s pockets… BINGO

I’m trying to see if I can trade my season tix for allocation money!

Allocation

That’s not how allocation money works.

by Dean_Moriarty on Feb 3, 2012 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

???

You mean the U can’t cash in on me too? I’m being fecitous, I understand how the allocation money works and realize that a large portion of money made from the event will go to S.U.M. and then distributed throughout the partners. However, my frustration of how they choose not to spend their money (which in turn was at some point ours)is very real.

Academy Team

Whichever team the Union end up running into, I really hope they set up a match between their academy sides – that was the best part of Everton Week.
