The under-23 United States Men's National Team will feature three Philadelphia Union players in camp and against the Mexico under-23 national team 29, per a press release from the team.

Under-23 head coach Caleb Porter selected Freddy Adu, Jack McInerney and Amobi Okugo, all members of the Union, the most players from any single team included on the roster. Philadelphia had five players in camp with the under-23 team multiple times, with starting right back Sheanon Williams, and new starting goalkeeper Zac MacMath also participating.

The three players will join their teammates in a 10-day camp on February 19, culminating in a friendly against Mexico's under-23 team on February 29.

Can anybody explain how Williams didn’t make the team? Who else among those defenders plays RB? (honest question; I’m still enough of a soccer novice not to know much beyond my own team.)

Sarkodie and Valentine both can. No clue why Williams didn’t make it.

Shocked that he didn’t make it!

Unless it’s an international fixture date, even the full USMNT staff has to lobby clubs for particular players or throw coaches a bone by keeping their hands off when a team is in a tight spot. Maybe Porter let MacMath and Williams stay with the Union for the remainder of preseason considering they’re unquestionable locks in our starting XI? Taking 5 guys from any team can be a bit of a hardship once things are actually rolling… especially when that team only has 14 returning players.

There’ll probably be 2 or 3 changes to the camp roster (injuries, club commitments, etc.), and there are a few weeks between the Mexico match and the start of qualifying, so don’t count Williams out yet.

If the hardship card is being played during the preseason, I suspect that that will play against Union fans’ hopes of seeing all five of these young men suit up in London.

If it is the case, though, that Caleb Porter doesn’t see a spot for Williams with the U-23s it sure makes all this RB depth for the Union look silly, doesn’t it?

D = Akron Zips

By all acounts Macmath is rated behind Hamid and Johnson, so that it is not a shock.

I would like to see Williams there, and feel he is deserving but all of the following players played for Porter at Akron so maybe there is a trust factor there:

Kitchen (who played rb for DC last year)
Sarkodie ( who plays rb for Houston)
Zarek Valentin (not sure where he plays on backline but think he is a full back)
Teal bunbury (ok not a defender, but a zip none the less)

Biggest omission in my opinion is Josh Gatt…

Williams

Has to be one of the most underrated players in the league at this point.
