Biggest Challenge
What team’s should we suspect to cause the Union the most troubles and within the team what struggles other than scoring should we be looking for?
(1) I think you’ll continue to see Houston, RSL, Dallas and the Galaxy as the teams that give the Union the most trouble. All four have gotten better in some way over the offseason, and while the Union have improved themselves, it won’t be enough to be able to say that the slight differences between the teams are now equaled out.
(2) Look at communication, consistency and chemistry problems on the left side of the field. The Union potentially have two new starters at left back and left midfield. That side of the field is really an unknown quantity right now.

Unknown quantity … except that Lopez/Daniel makes up the coolest coiffure tandem in the team, nay league.

Is Lopez winning the poll you put up on BigSoccer?
The Daniel-Lopez combination could be great, beyond just hair, but we don’t know. Daniel was in poor form in his last few appearances for T&T, before not playing for months.

Porfirio is winning, with just over 40% of the vote ...
Keon, I thought, played very well in the handful of times he actually saw the field in 2011. He may be long and lanky, but he’s got tons of strength, isn’t pushed off the ball easily, and has a pretty deft touch. He’s also been one of the few wingers who actually stays out along the touchline and isn’t afraid to get some chalk on his boots. And, he’s in a very exclusive club occupied by a few players who’ve scored with their heads in 2011 as well. That said, if I read into the tea leaves and exaggerate the Lopez cross/Valdes header against FGCU, then as long as Lopez and Daniel can develop some chemistry, I’m really liking the looks of things along the left.

Midfield
With Keon back, and Gabe pushing up to the midfield, bringing in Khalfan and Gomez (on top of M. Farfan, Adu, Torres): Is there any hope for consistency in the midfield lineup, or are we in for another year of the Starting XI guessing game?
If anything, I think the new additions will allow Nowak to have more of a guessing game.
Every player you’ve named can play multiple positions. The versatility of each player plays into Nowak’s lineup style, not against it.

It seems like Pajoy plays a fair amount from the wing. What are your thoughts of a 4-3-3 with Pajoy on on wing, Martinez on the other, with one of the other forwards in the middle?
He's a centrally based striker...
who likes to move outside. In most 433 sets, if employed, I think you’ll see him start over the middle. Martinez and McInerney are much more likely to be on the wing.

Unless I am mistaken, we traded Kyle Nakazawa and a draft pick to Los Angeles for an additional international spot that we are not currently making use of. Any insight into this?
It will be filled.

Albright
Any chance we’ll see Albright move back to his original forward (or midfield) position? Or is he just a backup for us, on the back line?
I highly doubt he moves back to FW after seven years in defense...
Midfield is a possibility, but I’ve been told by people that cover NYRB that Albright’s knees are sapped him of any speed. I’m thinking of him solely as defensive depth, unless something goes very wrong in the midfield.

Left Mid
Give me your 1-2-3 depth chart at Left Midfield.
1) Keon Daniel
2) Gabriel Farfan
3) Nazir Khalfan
You can toss Roger Torres and Freddy Adu in there somewhere as well.

Midfield
With so many options and the Union usually playing a 4 or 3 man midfield who looks to have command of certain positions or who is moving up in the depth chart?
This is what my current depth chart is:
LM – Daniel
CAM – Adu
CDM – Gomez
RM – M. Farfan.
I’d like to put Adu behind Torres, but Nowak appears to like Adu more. Gomez is in front of Carroll based upon his ability and international form.

Amobi
Where does he stand? He is young and possibly could go to the Olympics and qualifying for the season. Should we expect to see very little of him this season since he still has GA status (I think) and then see him play more next year?

He’s third on the depth chart and stands to get most of his playing from the Olympics. I really don’t know what will happen to him once he gets back from international duty, nor what happens after he loses his GA status post-2012.

Preseason
What information was gathered from the preseason game? What observations could be made? Who did what?
There's nothing beyond Lopez's cross to Valdes' head for the lone Union goal.
Also the information that the Union conceded against an out-of-season collegiate squad.

That's a tough one...
My feeling is that Mwanga is set to have a career year. I thought the same of him prior to Le Toux leaving, but now that minutes are “freed” up for him, if he’s put in the position to score, he will.
Otherwise, Gabriel Farfan. He should be back in the midfield (his more natural position) and that should benefit him greatly. I actually might think about switching around the two.

Training?
Any observations of how these new signings have been playing in training?
Gomez, most of the rookies were good, according to reports.
Gaddis not talked about, whether or not that is good or bad isn’t known right now. Michael Farfan appears to have done well with Sunderland and the coaching staff sees it. None of the strikers have gotten much ‘press’ yet.

Colombia league
How do you think the colombia league compares to the mls to gauge whether lajoy will have a bigger challenge here. I feel as though the best of the mls are better than the best of the colombian league but the worst of mls are worse then that of the colombia league.
It's higher scoring, less defense, much more inconsistent.
MLS is far and away a better league overall, but individual players in the Colombian league are great within it. Not everyone translates well into the physicality of MLS, we’ll have to see how Pajoy adjusts to playing against 6-foot, 4-inch powerful center backs in America.

Questions
1) What formation do you think the Union will be looking to play? Seems the most popular idea is 4-3-3, I personally don’t like it, but what are your takes? What do you wanna see?
2) Defensive mid depth chart? Gomez, Carroll, Amobi, Jordan? Does Carroll lose his spot to Gomez?
3) Forward depth chart? Where do you rank Hoffman on the team, do you think Nowak will give him limited minutes because of GA status?
4) Do you think Nowak is going to try to convert a player this season to an unfamiliar position (Richter to RB for example)?
And lastly
5) Line up you’d like to see as of now.
Figured I’d ask everything I can think of in one shot and hope you get to whatever you can. Thanks.
1) I’d like to see them employ various editions of the 4-4-2. I don’t see a midfield that can properly defend and attack out of a 4-3-3.
2) The order you’ve listed is what I think it currently stands as. Carroll only loses a starting spot to Gomez if the Union start Adu as a midfielder, or do not utilize a 4-5-1 (etc).
3) Pajoy – Mwanga – Martinez – McInerney – Hoffman. Expect Hoffman to play very little because of the GA status (ala McInerney, Okugo).
4) Greg Jordan (CDM, second rounder) is the prime target for such a conversion (CB).
5) GK: MacMath; LB: Lopez, LCB: Califf, RCB: Valdes, RB: Williams; LM: Daniel, ACM/CAM: Adu, CDM/CM: Gomez, RM: M. Farfan; ST: Pajoy, Mwanga

Adu striker
Some people are saying adu would be better as a full blown striker. What do you think?
I think it's ridiculous.
He’s not strong enough to hold the ball or turn his back to the goal, his shooting is suspect and it limits his ability to pass like he likes. A secondary, false-9 type of striker would make more sense for him, but the Union can’t afford to remove playing time for any of their four young strikers by doing that.

Le Toux trade
Not to beat a dead horse too much, but have you heard anything about Nowak’s side of the story? Is there any evidence to contradict Le Toux’s allegations in Chris Vito’s Delco Times article? Thanks.

Nowak said that he would talk about it when the time was right, if there ever was a right time. Something along those lines.

Expectations for the season
I know it might be hard to estimate, but how do you think the current team stacks up against last year’s team? Are you expecting playoffs again (or better) or will that be a struggle?
More talent, more potential, less predictability.
I still think this team will make the playoffs, but I don’t think it will win a playoff series at this moment. We’ll see how the strikers develop. That’s the huge question on the team.

He also is highly unlikely to be called up, with Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid in front of him, along with an overage goalkeeper probably being selected for the squad.

Worse better the same?
It’s obviously too early but predicting based off of what we know do you think our roster is worse off than last season so far? Leveled out with the new signings? Or even a little better? Mls talk podcast was saying we’re worse off but i think we have promisig youg and older players than have filled many gaps that were left when players such as mapp paunovic mondragon and le toux left. We gained experience and guidance back with some of these veterans and we have a lot of strikers to fill the gap le toux left. Maybe not completely but we have more options.
We're ahead in most positions, behind in one.
LB is upgraded, LM is technically upgraded, CM/CDM is upgraded, CAM is the same, RM is the same, defense other than defense is the same, GK is a push or a plus depending on your personal feelings about Mondragon and MacMath. Striker is a minus, no matter how you feel about the Le Toux trade. He accounted for almost 57% of the offense and that’s incredibly hard to fill with one GA, two MLS rookies (Martinez, Pajoy) and two unproven strikers (Mwanga and McInerney).

Does Adu look like he will earn his money this year? I know his “playing shape” was supposedly poor last year hence his limited time but after a full year will we see what we paid for?
Our 2 Academy signees, how major of a role will they play?
Our offense was kinda poor early on last year. Do we have the pieces to correct that?
Does Torres get 75+ minutes or is he still not gonna be game fit?
Who has shown the most improvement from last year?

"A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing."
1) Unless he plays as best or second best CAM/attacking midfielder in MLS, then no. The likelyhood of him doing either is slim, in my mind.
2) Pfeffer will probably see even less playing time this year and Jimmy has a chance at playing a bit on the right side, since the only depth there is Khalfan behind Marfan.
3) Depends on the chemistry coming out of camp. I doubt this team gets off to a flying start because of all the new parts.
4) There’s no chance he starts on a consistent basis (outside of the Olympic period) considering Adu’s salary and Nowak’s affinity for him.
5) I’m not ready to give that judgement.

Center back cover
Who is supposed to provide cover for Califf and Valdes? As far as I can see we are an injury or suspension away from a crisis in Central Defense.
I think Greg Jordan will be converted into a CB, while also being the fourth CDM.
Gomez, Lopez and Albright can also fill in at CB, Williams played there once last year and has in the past for other teams. Okugo played at CB for the Generation Adidas team and has ‘interned’ there at various international youth levels.
I’d still be more comfortable with actual, natural depth.

Amobi and Jack Mac
Do you think they stick around long if they don’t see a significant increase in playing time this year?
They have three years left on their contracts...
so it’d be up to the Union, not the players.

PPL Park
(1) Aware of any changes for the game-day experience this year?
(2) How likely do you think an expansion of the stadium is in the near future?
1) Union will have a different game day merchandise sales software program. Something like that.
2) Completely depends on how this season plays out, in my eyes.

Will the new signing be a DP so i can get off my high horse about the U being cheap? ;-)
It will not be, at least not the one I’m talking about.

Let's talk about you Scott....
What is the most frustrating aspect of running this blog? What is the most exciting?
Frustrating: figuring out what to write every day. I sometimes don’t write because of the stress caused by this blog. After breaking stories there are a ton of expectations to continue to do so. Between this and school, a lot on my plate.
Exciting: breaking a story. It’s a great feeling to give people new information.

Will the Union stick with the three known to be in camp, or will a different backup be brought in? Is Holder a possibility?

Think any Union players are selected? If so, which ones?

commentors
Do you feel you blog to a fairly soccer educated fan base, or do you think that we are off base? There were some interesting discussions during the Letoux trade/ youth movement articles which seemed to split people right down the middle.
I think we have a nice mixture of ‘experts,’ average and casual/novice fans on here. It makes for interesting discussions, for sure. My hope is that the community continues to expand and that every single article published on here gets to double digit comments.
tBG was the second largest soccer blog on SBN last month and has one of the smaller communities in terms of active member numbers and comment numbers.

Best: bought at Martinez at a ‘cut rate’ price.
Worst: Le Toux sold/traded in league.

Nowak
(1) Does this team buy into Nowak right now? Do you think they resent the Le Toux trade as much as the fans (and perhaps are worried about their own future), or do you think they’ve moved on?
(2) What if this team opens the season 0-5? Would your answer change?
1) In public, yes, they buy into him. Haven’t heard otherwise.
2) Any team that starts winless in its first five games will have doubts.

Players Pay/Contracts
Are these made between player and team, or is there some sort of a twist that the league has rights to players… I ask that because i recall reading that if players aren’t traded before their last year of contract the league can trump a sale if they want to keep the player in the league.
MLS signs contracts with the players.
Last year of the contract gives MLS first choice on whether or not to sell a player overseas, but the team still has to okay the deal.

Le Toux improved in '12 (gained stamina)...
but Mwanga was horribly done (he even has complained about it), Okugo, other young players awful. Adu, Torres decent. Overall, poor by EA.

adu-money
We all read that le toux was traded so the extra cash could buy the younger players. Why wasn’t adu traded instead? No demand for him? Perhaps they think he’ll do better this year then be worth more?
