The 2012 MLS SuperDraft starts at 12 pm EST today, with television coverage starting at that time on ESPN2 (also available through ESPN's web service ESPN3). The Philadelphia Union have two natural SuperDraft selections, the 13th overall pick (13th in the first round) and the 32nd overall pick (13th in the second round), plus the 35th overall pick (16th in the second round) from Sporting Kansas City, received as part of the Shavar Thomas trade in 2010.
Feel free to talk about the SuperDraft, any rumors surrounding it, the Union and otherwise in this live SuperDraft thread. The Brotherly Game will be publishing pick posts during the SuperDraft, but will also update this post itself (below) with who the Union choose during the draft. If any trades happen, this post will be updated with those transactions as well. The current rumors are that Danny Mwanga is on the trade block and that the Union are interested in the New England Revolution's third overall pick.

I guess it makes sense in a “weak” draft class to try and get a high pick (NE 3rd overall) to get the best talent but is trading Mwanga the answer? I know there has to be some behind the scenes shit going on but to me he still looks like he has the potential to be something special.

Picking Hoffman along with all the offseason pick ups is not leaving a lot of room for Danny Mwanga….
I'd hate to see him go
but yeah the room available coupled with his salary make it hard to keep him. Guess it depends on what someone is willing to give us. Seems a little crass to trade a first overall selction 2 years after we drafted him but if there’s nothing there to salvage I guess you have to. Personally I hope not as I think he can be special.

Mwanga had a sophomore slump, I think taking Hoffman essentially sends the message of “If you don’t pick it up this season, we will drop you when you go off Generation Addidas status,” to Mwanga.

Which is garbage is my opinion, Danny is great, he had an off sophomore season and that’s okay. Has such potential ahead of him. That wold really be a harsh move for the Union.

You combine the drop in numbers combined with the rumored attitude problems, factor in the fact that in spite of all the “potential” we have on this team, we want to win now. Its a motivator for the guy – "Play to your potential, or we have your immediate replacement in Hoffman/JackMac ready.

thats why I want him on loan. I think putting him on loan will expose him to new coaches and I know from personal experience that not every coach is good for every player so maybe being exposed to a new coach could help him improve his game

I don’t think that its people don’t like Mwanga, but there were times during last season when Mwanga simply disappeared. The guy should be young, hungry, trying to score goals. I WANT Mwanga to do good, I want him to do good for us.
However, we’re not totally aware of what goes one behind the scenes. Maybe Mwanga has a horrible attitude, maybe he really was hurt. I hope that he becomes what he was drafted to be, however, the Union are obviously preparing for the eventuality if he continues his slide.

Anyone else want to see Le Toux and Marfan in the mid with Torres in the center
Those three moving around with Martinez/Hoffman/Mwanga/JackMac/Paunovic. I would prefer Martinez as the striker then and Mwanga as a holding forward that can play with his front to the goal opposed to his back.

Lopes/Valdes/Califf/Williams.
with Hoffman off the bench primarily as a natural striker might be an option before Paunovic maybe even JackMac. Garfan/Paunovic/Khalfan/Daniel with midfielder bench depth and help for tired legs since Novak loves a rotary midfield it seems.
Get us some tall CBs for defense and this team just keeps getting betters.
I would love a 4-1-3-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 with those players working on possession and attacking sense. Deeper roster WOOT.

only after we shipped out Ruiz we had no scoring. I think using him running around the entire pitch while keeping spots open for more striker and goal threats would make him more valuable. you can always slot paunovic in the center forward playing position allowing more movement up front for le toux since he could move back to le touxs spot. I would love to see Le toux in a full season not needing to be our goal threat.
