Source: Keon Daniel May Not Return To The Philadelphia Union In 2011
Keon Daniel may not return to the Philadelphia Union this season, according to a source close to the player.
The source told the Brotherly Game that, "Keon [Daniel] isn't coming back this season. I know people thought he would return in a week or two, but no. Not until next season."
When asked about the reasons for why Daniel will not return this season, the source said, "Someone forgot to redo his work permit or visa."
A league source told Scott Kessler, the Brotherly Game's Managing Editor, that if Daniel is unavailable for the remainder of the season the Union can utilize his international roster spot for another player. However, this situation would require that Daniel either be released or placed on an injury list by the MLS roster freeze. The problem with the latter is that Daniel is not technically in a position to be placed on such a list.
The problems for the 25-year-old stem from his attempt to return from international duty. Daniel was recently called up to play in 2014 World Cup qualifiers for Trinidad and Tobago. Due to playing for T&T, Daniel missed the Union's September 7 game, a 4-4 draw with New England.
Some time before Saturday, September 10, reports surfaced that Daniel would not be available for that day's match versus the Portland Timbers because of immigration issues.
Although the team would not confirm or deny the reports, Kerith Gabriel, of the Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com, tweeted that a representative from the Union sent saying that Daniel would "not be available for tomorrow's match. We are working to resolve the issues and hope to have a prompt solution."
Since coming to the Union, after playing with the Puerto Rico Islanders, Daniel has played in 18 games, starting 9 of them. Daniel has played a total of 888 minutes, accumulating one goal, two assists, with six fouls committed and one caution.
Daniel's last match for the Union was August 20 versus the Columbus Crew, when he logged 73 minutes and was credited with one assist.

What the hell?
This is ridiculous. Every sports league in this country deals with immigration issues. I’ve heard of players missing a game or two but they always manage to get the appropriate expedited paperwork and necessary waivers to get players in. Also, why weren’t immigration issues checked thoroughly before he left the country? That’s just a basic step. The Union seemed to be such a well-run organization until the middle of this season, but they just seem to be falling apart now.
Embarrassment...
for whoever is at fault for this. Daniel will be a huge loss, as, I think we can agree, he was our best link up player, able to maneuver the ball from defense to midfield and even into the attack at times.

I’m not sure how this kind of thing happens, but I’d have to think the Union aren’t the ones responsible for making sure the proper paperwork is filed when a player leaves for international duty. Would think it would be on the T&T federation, the player, or the player’s agent / handlers before it’s on the Union. He made it to and from Toronto and Vancouver without incident.
Now if it’s long-term paperwork (like his work visa expired some time ago and it’s just now coming to light that he was here beyond its terms), that would be something the Union should be on top of.
This happened to Sav Rocca over the summer – it didn’t look like he was going to be allowed back this season. With the labor situation, he couldn’t apply for the proper paperwork and he and his family had to wait it out in Australia. When the lockout was finally over in late July, he had to apply for his visa before he could come back, deal with his family’s basketball hoop (destroyed in a winter storm), and get a job with the ’skins.

The way I see it, if this is MLS’ responsibility, there’s no way they forget to do this if Daniel was playing for LA.

If this comes to fruition
this is a huge blow to an already short staffed team. Daniel was a good player who made our midfield more dangerous when he was in there. Hopefully they can get this taken care of this season yet, but if not I guess increased playing time for Marfan might be in the mix.
