McLaughlin Scores Game Winner In First Start For Colgate, Named Rookie Of The Week
Philadelphia Union academy star Jimmy McLaughlin is already making an impact at Colgate, as the freshman has impressed in his first two games in college.
The 19-year-old started his first ever collegiate game against Syracuse on August 27, scoring in the 53rd minute to beat the Orange. McLaughlin picked up on a save that was spilled back out into the Syracuse box and slotted it home, providing the Raiders with all the scoring they needed. He followed up his debut goal with a 97 minute performance versus Hartwick, exiting the game 13 minutes before Colgate's eventual game winner.
Currently credited with two points despite only scoring a single goal and having no assists, so far, McLaughlin was named as the BRINE Patriot League Rookie of the Week. The attacking midfielder first made his way into the minds of Union fans with his display against English Premier League club Everton, when he embarrassed English international left back Leighton Baines.

Other Academy News Bites
Chris Somerville scored for Virginia in a 7-1 rout of Richmond, but I’m not entirely sure if he’s still a part of the Academy system since he hasn’t appeared in a reserve game.
Mike Gonzalez has started both of Lehigh’s games so far, while Ryan Dodds came off the bench in Lafayette’s first game. Jonathan Kumher came off the bench in Bowling Green’s second game of the year, a win over Indiana-Purdue Fort Worth. Bowling Green actually just shocked national #9 Michigan last week, but Kumher sat that one out.
Finally, central defender Matt Jeffery has started both of Monmouth’s games to start the season, with wins over St. Peter’s and Boston University.
The great thing is that starting next summer, all of these players will be able to come together on the Union’s PDL affiliate, Reading United AC, where they will continue to gel and remain under the watchful eye of the Union brass.

Yep, good to see that as he enters his final season in high school. St Benedicts should hardly even be considered a high school because I think they actually recruit players, but that’s a different issue
