Jay Sugarman And Piotr Nowak Approach Faryd Mondragon About Contract Extension
Philadelphia Union chairman Jay Sugarman and head coach Piotr Nowak have talked with Faryd Mondragon about extending his time with the team, according to Mondragon.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper tweeted to a Galatasaray fan, one of his former teams during his long career, that the Union have approached him about adding a year to his contract.
@barisungan the Chairman and the Coach told me they want me to extend 1 more year my contract here and I love the idea to stay and live here
The news comes only two weeks after the former Colombian national team starter stated his desire to eventually retire as a member of the Union.

Not a problem
Not sure how likely that is, but if we have two keepers who can play, then that is a good problem to have. We’ll be insured in case of an injury to either, and MacMath can get some games without the pressure that comes with the starting goalkeeper label.

Yeah, it’s tough to assume that even a healthy Mondragon will continue to make every start (of course, we’ve said that about Kasey Keller every year, haven’t we). Unless the league shifts back to an unbalanced schedule next year, it wouldn’t surprise me to see MacMath start some of the team’s Wednesday matches in 2012, in addition to reserve team matches.

Think of this...
McMath will only be 21 during the 2012 season. 21. The fact that he will be getting any starts for a top team in MLS speaks to his potential and current ability.
Can’t wait to see what he can do after being tutored by Mondragon.

Outside the MLS very few top goalies get starters mins before age 24-25. How old was Tim Howard when he became a starter? Vandersar? Cech?….older than 21.
Counterpoint: David de Gea
He’s 21 and will be starting for Manchester United this upcoming season.

Give me Faryd for as many years as possible. Yes, McMath should be ready soon and has tremendous upside but it is painfully obvious that Mondragon is built for Philly. Every time he comes down to The River End and pounds his chest at us, I’m giddy as a school girl. The guy’s fire is contagious.
