After the jump, we break down what this all means...
- With the release of Thorne Holder, the Union now have one open international spot and one discovery claim left.
- The Union are now down to 16 senior players, which means that the team will continue to be penalized because it is carrying less than 18 of them. "A minimum salary budget charge will be imputed against a team's salary budget for each unfilled senior roster slot below 18."
- Based on the above information, the Union are currently down $126,000 in salary cap room. $42,000 was lost from only carrying 17 senior players (after the Jordan Harvey trade), $42,000 is lost from releasing Holder (all MLS contracts are fully guaranteed after July 1) and $42,000 is currently lost - pending a signing - because Holder was a member of the senior team, leaving the Union with two less players than the minimum 18.
- Houapeu has not yet received his green card. His status on that front is still unknown. His distinction as an "apprentice" means that he makes less than MLS minimum salary, which is $42,000. Houapeu's salary is listed as $32,604.
- There is still one supplemental or "off budget" roster spot left. It was vacated when Chris Agorsor was released.
- Since the team is not using roster spots "29/30," $70,000 of allocation money is currently in the Union's possession. Even if a player is brought into the first team/senior squad, the Union will still be down $14,000 after factoring the added $70,000 into the lost $84,000.
- MLS cap this season is right around $2.67 million and the Union's 16 senior roster players are worth $2,214,168.17, sans Paunovic's salary which is as of now unknown. Add in the loss of $42,000 by waiving Holder after July 1, the Union have up to $413,831.83 to spend on players for the rest of the season.

Agreed, including the actual amount of the “bucket of cash” the Union received for Jordan Harvey. If it was truly an offer that couldn’t be passed up, as various reports indicated, just how much was it? Unknown.

A couple of thoughts:
1) These “charges” are not permanent for the season. Yes, Holder’s salary is on our cap for this year. But if we were to add senior players 17 and 18, this $84,000 wouldn’t remain. Basically they are penalties to keep teams from having $2.67M on the cap with only 14 players, and thus allowing their average salary to be higher than a team who had 18.
2) If we have ~$450K to spend on two roster slots, then a DP could be a possibility, if we are willing to spend out of pocket monies over $335K. That would still allow us about $115K left under the cap to be able to acquire a player within MLS.
Those figures were without Paunovic's salary. It's unknown.

The first statement isn’t quite true due to the second. We actually have three “off budget” spots left available. But if use more than 1 of them, we would lose the $35K of allocation money you get for not using each of spots 29 and 30.
As a matter of principle, it doesn’t make sense to fill more than 1 of the off budget spots at this point, because that $70,000 in allocation money can come in handy in the future. But technically, those spots are there if we need them.
I don’t know why the team would voluntarily (?) keep senior roster spots open and be penalized for it …
$400k+ to spend on players for the rest of the season isn’t too shabby. Can we hope that Gonzo’s contract is bought and take that $190k+ off the payroll as well?
$450k without knowing how much Paunovic costs.

Use the money on players we got?
It may be smart to try and think about the future also. I’m pretty happy with the team. Roger Torres comes to mind, His loan is gonna need to be extended this year, or maybe use the cash now to secure his rights from Cali(I think). Additionally, Mwanga is going to graduate from GA,maybe Jack also. Their contracts are up also? Could You use allocation money now to extend players?
I just don’t see The U getting some older DP type. Petr likes to give everyone mins, especially the kids.Who would you take mins away from? I really like the Unions play, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
If it ain’t broke…
