I’m fine. Japan are a good team and that was a game for the ages. Plus I kind of feel for them after the devastating earthquakes that struck the region earlier in the year. They beat the host nation, a good Swedish side, and the U.S.

They’re calling this one from a studio in Philadelphia. J.P. and Twellman live in Boston. Flat out sad that the Union doesn’t feel that they can (doesn’t feel that they need) to have their announcers on-site.

Comcast Sportsnet

Thought: the game is on CSN-New England for the Revs, so I wonder if Comcast will save even more money by just having a single feed/production crew with just slapping on some different graphics for each team.

by Laaaaazzz on Jul 17, 2011 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Revs matches are produced by a Kraft company using Comcast graphics, so while that may have been true last week with San Jose, this may be like any other studio match (e.g., taking Rogers Sportsnet’s video from Vancouver, taking Altitude’s video from Colorado).

At least Toronto is getting their act together

The Revs are a mess, and it won’t get better until they get their own stadium.

I’ve always found them to be a boring franchise anyway.

by phillyhoosfan on Jul 17, 2011 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s sad. And Kraft probably sees little reason to build a stadium for them — why should he have two stadia in the Boston area when he already has one?

Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog

by Ben Feldman on Jul 17, 2011 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's the real question.

If he doesn’t care about the team, which he clearly doesn’t, why won’t he sell it? It’s not like it’s a huge money maker for him.

by Scott Kessler on Jul 17, 2011 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope — they’re losing money. So it’s a question of finding a dedicated ownership group with the money to buy the team (because Kraft won’t sell it for cheap), build a $200 million stadium, and then pay an exorbitant amount of money for two seasons or so to continue to use Gillette as the club’s home while the stadium’s being built.

Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog

You’re probably out $400 million easy before you can start reaping the benefits of having a full season in your beautiful new revenue-generating stadium. Unfortunately, in this economy, it’s hard to put that much money together…

Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog

by Ben Feldman on Jul 17, 2011 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

New England has been on the list of “MLS teams that make money” for some time now. I doubt they make a significant profit, but Kraft surely makes money on the team. He basically uses Patriots staff to run stuff (which is why their efforts are half assed) and doesn’t have to pay rent for the stadium. And it’s not like he’s using money to buy DPs or anything.

I doubt Kraft has any incentive to sell the team.

The tension was pretty small really and was more between SOB leadership and the rank and file. I never got the sense that the SOB elders had any problems with what the front office was asking of them; everyone seemed to be on the same page.

Inevitably, in any professional relationship, there are going to be some disputes and compromises. Union and their supporters seem to me to get along as well as any teams do.
