Carlos Ruiz "Will Return To Play With" Puebla FC

CHESTER, PA - MAY 11: Carlos Ruiz #20 of the Philadelphia Union takes shot on goal while being defended by Omar Gonzalez #4 of the Los Angeles Galaxy at PPL Park on May 11, 2011 in Chester, Pennsylvania. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. (Photo by Drew Hallowell/Getty Images)

Puebla based Periodico Sintesis, a local news outlet arm of Periodico Digital, is reporting that the Philadelphia Union's Carlos Ruiz is all but set to join former club Puebla FC when the transfer window opens on July 15.

Ruiz has been linked to multiple teams throughout Mexico and his native Guatemala, most notably Puebla and Estudiantes. Of the links, Puebla appears to be the most interested team in 'El Pescadito,' according to Periodico Sintesis. The news outlet used information from one of its sources to declare that Ruiz is on his way out of Philadelphia:

"Although [Puebla's] sporting director Jesus Lopez Chargoy would only say that new reinforcements would be revealed at the draft, because he wants to protect his interests from promoters, it is known from a good source that Carlos "El Pescadito" Ruiz will return to play with La Franja (Puebla)."

In a separate article, Periodico Sintesis repeated the source's thoughts on Ruiz and added that the transfer isn't official - yet:

"Diego Cervantes (America) and Carlos Ruiz (Philadelphia Union) are waiting to make official their arrival to La Franja."

Star-divide

The 31-year-old striker is currently playing for his country in the Gold Cup, while the Union have found some semblance of offensive cohesion during Ruiz's time away from the team. Ruiz scored a goal in Guatemala's 4-0 win over Grenada to help the Central American country move onto the next round of the Gold Cup.

What can we expect in compensation?

Wish we could know how much Gaston Puerari went to Atlas for...

would have been something to use as a marker of sorts.

I think unloading his salary is as much compensation as we can expect.
We should probably all remember that, in a negotiation, the other club is going to pay as little as possible for a player, and if they believe the Union value Ruiz as anything less than his $300,000 salary (which, I guarantee they do, or he wouldn’t be available this early in the season), they’re not going to offer us hardly anything except to take on his contract.

Since I know this board is about to fill up with anti-Ruiz comments...

I just want to put it out there that I like Ruiz and I hope he stays in Philly for the rest of the season. He’s a much more mature player than in his younger years, but I don’t think the fans here received him with open minds. He has been made to bear virtually all the blame for the team’s slow early-season offense, and he has been unlucky to have been away for the recent turn-around. If he plays again for Philly and the team reverts back to an anemic offense I will eat my words, but I predict instead he will take advantage of his team’s newfound cohesion to add to his goal tally.

Now go ahead, pile on… I can take it!

It's not so much anti ruiz

as anti his acquisition. A player of his caliber was supposed to add to what was a decent offense last year and while the goals he made were excellent, there were not enough to warrant the amount the Union were paying him. His addition did nothing to improve our offense and that is where the negative reaction will come from. I wish Ruiz woulda been half the player he was in his younger years but with a semblance of an offense now starting to take hold a transfer move seems like the right choice. I wish him luck if he does indeed go to Puebla but I feel his move will help our younger players to grow and not negatively affect our quest for the MLS cup. Doop!

I didn't like the acquisition of Ruiz, but I have defended him on tBG in the past.

He hasn’t been put in the right position to succeed by the technical staff. Check out my reply to sully below.

I think you’re right that Ruiz got more grief than he deserved, but I have no doubts that he was rather ineffective. Unloading his hefty (in MLS terms) salary could allow us to bring in a true $300,000 contributor.
Now, we can all give Serbian former-retirees the grief if he gets any playing time over Mwanga/McInerney.

by UnionFan on Jun 16, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get the hate. I don’t see what Ruiz has done with this team to warrant the vitriol that seems to flow every time his name comes up. I think that it is a mistake to point to the Toronto game as an example of what impact Ruiz (or the lack thereof) has on the offense. Toronto’s defense was just that bad. It really wouldn’t have mattered who was on the pitch against them, and it is very possible that Ruiz would have also had a multi-goal game in that outing. I think that Carlos is really the victim of a very messy personnel situation in which everyone wants to see Mwanga play because of his potential, nobody wants to write of Le Toux for his hustle, what he’s already done for us, and what he’s capable of if he can break his current slump, and Ruiz is the odd-man-out. The guy has had a couple nice goals for us, and I think now that the midfield has drastically improved, he’s likely to start finding the net quite a bit more. The question, then, though, is who is left standing when the music stops playing…?

by sully127 on Jun 15, 2011 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

It’s mostly preconceived. People didn’t like Ruiz before he joined the team, so he’s an easy target for hate/blame.

For the record, I think he’d been a decent pickup but doesn’t fit in well with the rest of the team. We don’t have the service from the midfield that he needs to be as effective as possible. And I do think his large (for MLS) salary limits other moves. So, I’m okay with his being sold, especially if Philly can get some allocation money from a transfer fee. That said, I wouldn’t have a problem with him staying on the team.

"People didn’t like Ruiz before he joined the team"

Agreed. I know I sure didn’t. I still don’t to be honest, but I do think he’s worked hard for the club and I wouldn’t really put the offensive struggles on him.

That said, I don’t really think we lose anything without him.

You raise some reasonable points.

The question that needs to be asked is: Why hasn’t Nowak put Ruiz in the position to succeed? He’s not a target forward, he’s a poacher. Nowak has played him at target forward over and over again and it has not suited Ruiz. Playing with his back to the ball isn’t Ruiz’s thing – it’s Moreno’s. It’s my thought that Nowak wanted to replace Moreno and saw Ruiz as someone who could score more while drawing more fouls as well. He’s changed his approach to midfield tactics this year, but not to his striker tactics.

When Ruiz First Came To The Union...

I took a wait and see approach. I was neither for nor against his signing when it was first reported. Those that have seen me post here in the past will know that I have since drifted into the “not impressed with Ruiz” group, for lack of a better designation. For me, and for a lot of people I’ve spoken with about Ruiz over the last few months, it appears that he takes significant chunks of time off in the middle of games when he’s on the field. There were other moments throughout the season where it appeared that he simply gave up on some through balls and 50/50 balls. Honestly, for me it was never about his lack of production as much as it was that he just appeared “lazy”/lacking interest/playing beneath his talents at times throughout matches, and thats just something you can’t get away with in this town. There have been some that have called for Le Toux to take a game off to clear his head due to his lack of production this year, but the guy can never be accused of laziness which is why I think people are more inclined to give him a pass. Its a city that respects and applauds hard work and effort, even when results aren’t always the product. And I just never got the impression that Ruiz was always giving 100% game in and game out..

Seba Le toux

You think there’s any takers for Le toux ?

by Boogs133 on Jun 15, 2011 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

No, for multiple reasons.

The first and foremost being that this team, and its main sponsor Bimbo, has made him into the face of the team and he’s a fan favorite. Plus he currently has no value, with the question of being a one-hit-wonder hanging over his head.

Fan fave?

LeToux was a fan favorite in Seattle as well.

Granted, that is A reason to keep him, along with the other, more “important” reasons you listed, but it cannot be THE reason to keep him on the roster.

by AD22 on Jun 16, 2011 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

“fan favorite” has meanings of different degrees, there is a difference from being a likeable role player in Seattle to being an MLS record holder for Philadelphia. Le Toux’s not going anywhere

by UnionFan on Jun 16, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

You're correct with that statement.

I threw it on after the face of the team/sponsor comment for that exact reason.

it is

the reason he keeps getting starts over our younger players at the striker position in my opinion. I still am an advocate for moving him to midfield.

No, no, no, no, no midfield for Le Toux.

His past history shows that he is not successful in the least when playing out of the midfield.

I don't like Ruiz, but to be honest, the things I really don't like about didn't seem to crop up here.

But he also wasn’t very effective so seeing him go won’t really hurt us at all. He is making too much for the production we are getting. He just isn’t the type of player to succeed on this team, so this will be best for all parties involved I would think.
