Califf out, Harvey out, Gonzo did not travel.

Look for Michael or Gabriel Farfan at left back, Amobi Okugo at center back and Stefani Miglioranzi back in the starting line up.

Migs in at CB, Okugo at CDM.

Welcome to the world of Piotr Nowak.

I dunno. Given how Okugo connected with the offense versus San Jose, I’d prefer to have him in the midfield. We have desperately needed someone who can actually serve the ball forward.

The bigger question to me is why no Gonzalez? But without him playing, I’m fine with having Migs at CB. Anyone you put there is less than ideal.

by Laaaaazzz on May 6, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

One of those two has received critical acclaim from US scouts/officials for his CB play, while the other hasn’t done much of anything wherever he plays.

(Answer to the former is Okugo, with the Generation Adidas team in Spain, second is… well, Migs)

I’m not comfortable with Migs in CB at all.

But I think it can’t be examined in a vacuum. Okugo over Migs at CB makes sense in isolation. But given this team and how crappy the defense to offense connection has been with Migs/Carroll as D-mids at the start of the season, I want to see Okugo in the midfield who can actually connect a pass. Migs is actually decent at winning balls, but can’t pass for crap – if all he does is defend and kick the ball away tonight, I can live with that.

Just IMHO.

Notable players left off of the 18-man gameday roster:

Daniel is injured (but was listed as “probable”) with a foot contusion.

JDG is just an enigma to me. He was injured early in the season, but was healthy enough to play in a reserve game. If he isn’t going to start/travel for this game with Califf out and Harvey red carded, when will he play?

I’m excited to see Michael Farfan start.

by Laaaaazzz on May 6, 2011 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t use a probable injury as the reason why.

Are you talking about Daniel? I would be virtually certain the injury is why he’s not on the gameday roster. Califf was listed as “probable” as well on the injury report and he isn’t playing either. I think they were both too dinged up to warrant traveling across the country with a midweek game at home looming. The team probably decided to be conservative and have them rest and be ready for the next game.

by Laaaaazzz on May 6, 2011 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying the perceived reason, just the real one. Understand that Nowak would want to “rest” a player or two, but it’s interesting that a ‘true’ outside player in Mapp is starting on a narrow field, instead of Daniel, who up until now usually played as a CM.

Yeah, I think they might fit better if they revert to the more standard three-letter abbreviations, but I’ll give FOX a lot of credit for actually having someone take the time to modify their scoreboard bug to shrink it down a bit and make it seem like its goal is to get out of the way of the viewers — which is ultimately the goal.

I’m not sure how most of the first half played out, but based on the last 15 minutes, I’m happy not to be down. I feel like we’ve relied on scoring that lucky goal too often this season, but that’s what I’m relying on tonight.

by mattjg on May 6, 2011 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure whether it’s the smaller pitch, or G. and M. Farfan (or a combination of both), but I do think the pace has been faster from the Union than it has been in the past this season. The Union have gotten space several times on the right side, and I think their offensive game thus far as looked better than what we’ve been used to seeing. Of course, as Scott has been saying, the Union need to be careful on set pieces and corners for Portland, but I think the Union would be content where they are, if not a touch disappointed they’re not ahead.

This is worse than the Galaxy match. We can’t score if we can’t cross mid-field.

The reverse jinx works. Put in the free kick!

Set piece defense once again is suspect.

Sigh.

I don’t know that they’ll get a better chance than that.

I don’t see why they attacked Williams. It’s not like he was kicking Perkins or anything.

Ugh. Nothing to be happy about tonight. Those 1-0 wins couldn’t last forever. The Union has to figure out how to score consistently.

No call when Torres took Chara down in the box.

3 Philadelphia teams played today

And combined, they could only score 1 goal/run. Incredible, when you think about it.
