I am surprised to see both Le Toux and both starting CBs. Midfield is kind of exciting, two players who seem willing to play wide and then only two CMs, hopefully that will spell better/more balls for Le Toux and Ruiz. Nice to see Richter and Pfeffer on the bench.

DC are starting 3 homegrown players with Shanoksky on bench while union have Pfeffer and I think it would be fair to include Richter as representing Philly Homegrown types.

What does Torres have to do to get into the starting line-up?! Unless Nowak plans on starting him against NYRB, since we know he does (or did, anyway) have trouble playing 90 minutes.

Thats what I hope the plan is as well. Let him sit and be ready for a start Sat.

I guess Nowak is taking this tournament seriously, depending on the time some of these guys log. My guess is we see jac mac early into the second and mwanga. Carrol will prob exit fairly early too, try to get a goal or two up early so we can save our guys for Sat. Should be a strong press right out the box, which could give Mondragon some busy work if we lag on the counters to much. Lets Win Union!!! DOOP!

No Mwanga?

Man he must be in a funk or something. Is he injured and no one is reporting it? Confidece issues? one would think he would get a start to get his game in line…

Weird too, since by all accounts (AKA the very limited info the Union was giving out…) he was having a very good preseason.

Surprised we’re not seeing Mac starting simply because he’s one of the few healthy guys who we know can’t play on Saturday (due to last weekend’s red card).

Unfortunately, it really is a good thing to be out of this tournament so early. As it is constructed, the Open Cup is such a completely useless tournament that all it does tax your players for absolutely no benefit at all. Most of these games aren’t even on TV, no one outside of the hardcore soccer community even knows it exists and even the hardcores don’t care about it.

Is there even prize money?

Aside from maybe giving your reserve team some competitive games, I can’t see a single benefit. It really is too bad though, because it would be cool if we had a meaningful national cup competition, but we really don’t.

I was wondering if someone would post this classic reply after the elimination

USOC is an important tournament. Yes there is prize money. More importantly, it’s a major piece of silverware and an entry into CCL.

Had you made it in, you’d be ecstatic and there’d be no mention of a useless tournament.

That said, I’m sad Philly didn’t make it in. They’d be a fun team to meet in the final.

by chrisperry1983 on Apr 7, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

No it’s not “very important” and yes I would have said the same thing had they made it in.

I assume you make these silly assumptions because you obviously haven’t been around for a while, but I’ve been saying this fact since before the Union even existed.

The USOC is a “major piece of silverware?” In what world? If that that’s the case why aren’t the games televised? Why do managers often play reserve sides in the tournament? Is that what managers do when they’re in a “very important” tournament for a “major piece of silverware?” It’s kinda adorable that you think this, but it’s just not the case.

Whatever team you root for, good luck. Hopefully the final of this “very important” event is televised.

I agree it is not a major tournament, but win it, and you get into the CONCACAF Champions League like chrisperry1983 mentioned so I do not feel it is completely useless, but you are right. It would be much better if the U.S. had a more meaningful national cup competition.

And having the big prize being getting into the CCL is maybe proof enough that it’s small potatoes. I mean, the CCL itself isn’t really a big deal. Do we even get english language broadcasts of that? For some reason though, I have more confidence in the CCL one day growing into something, while the USOC will probably always be third rate.

I really feel like the only way we could have a major national cup competition in this country is if a network sponsored it. Kind of like what they attempted to do with Superliga. An event is never going to be a big deal here unless it’s on TV and nothing is going to get on TV unless someone has ownership stake in it unfortunately. I think that’s just the nature of how things works in sports here.

So does it have to be the ESPN cup or Fox sports Cup? The Adidas cup? I dunno…

by JasonB on Apr 8, 2011 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

So I think the total winners prize for the USOC is a hundred grand, which I assume wouldn’t even cover the wage bill for an MLS team for the game. Obviously if you want to make clubs take it seriously that has to change and the only way that changes for some entity to pump money into it.

If you have a competition where clubs lose money just by being in it…. It’s going to be hard for them or fans to take it seriously.
