Meet The Players Fan Event Delivers For Some, Disappoints For Others

Last night, the Philadelphia Union held a rescheduled version of the Meet the Players event. The gathering at PPL Park offered fans the chance to get autographs from and take pictures with their favorite Union players.

The event has been referred to by many as a rousing success. But not all of the fans that made the trek to PPL were able to experience this event in its entirety.

It was billed as starting at 7 PM on Tuesday night. A message on the Union's website encouraged fans to arrive early as the Stadium Club can only fit so many people.

Unfortunately, the team did not make any suggestions on how early fans should try to arrive. Reports on Twitter were saying that lines were present outside of PPL Park as early as 4 PM. I happened to arrive at 6:40, which turned out to be not nearly early enough.

Many fans did make it into the Stadium Club, and were able to enjoy food and drinks as they mingled with their favorite members of the Union. The rest of us were left out to freeze in the cold, as the team closed off the Stadium Club. I would venture to say that around 100 people were left outside, unable to get into the main event.

Star-divide

Eventually, a member of the Union staff came outside and tried to console us. He told us that the team was sending 4 players down to the team store, where everyone in line would be able to at least get something out of the trip. So after another 20 minutes or so of waiting, I finally got into the team store and had the pleasure of meeting and getting autographs from Levi Houapeu, Michael Farfan, Juan Diego Gonzalez, and Brian Carroll.

The team officials told fans that 4 more players would come down and replace the original 4, so if any fans were willing to wait in line again, they could meet more of the Union. I wanted to make the most of the trip, so I waited for another 15 or 20 minutes and got 4 more autographs from Stefani Miglioranzi, Danny Califf, Zach Pfeffer, and Carlos Ruiz.

By the end of the event, I was actually just feeling thankful that the team had given all the fans an opportunity to at least meet a few players. One highlight of the evening involved 5 Guatemalans who were in front of me in line the second time around; they had the chance to meet their hero, El Pescadito Ruiz. They were brimming with joy as he signed their Guatemalan flag and took pictures with them.

In the end, though, the final result is a bit disappointing. Why couldn't the team have held the event out on the field, or in some larger setting? The Union brass probably didn't expect the turnout that they received. I would have liked the opportunity to meet new captain Faryd Mondragon, but maybe next time.

For some photos I took from the event, see this album on the Brotherly Game's Facebook page. For an idea of why I left feeling a bit disappointed by not getting into the Stadium Club, see this photo essay from the Philly Soccer Page.

I think they should’ve done a FREE TICKET system so no one wasted a drive all the way to CHESTER through a TRAFFIC JAM… or had it at a venue where space wasn’t an option. But they did warn that space was limited… so they aren’t completely at fault.

Wow, that free ticket system wouldve been an excellent idea, I hadn’t thought of that. I had thought of whether making it only for season ticket holders would’ve been a good idea.. I don’t think all of the people there were STHs.

RSL Soapbox said, over Twitter, that Real Salt Lake does one during the summer and only for season ticket holders.

FREE Concerts do it all the time.. First X amount of people who order the free tickets online or who pick up tix at the box office get to go to the event later.

omg cry me a river…. they said space was limited, so do what you have to to get there early and get in like me, or don’t cry about it when you show up 20 minutes before they open the door. You should feel very lucky they sent anyone down to the store at all.

I'm Taking a Pass on This Stuff

I would have liked to have gone to this event to take pictures and check out what was happening. After reading that I wasn’t guaranteed to get in, I decided to to take a pass, especially after the mess at Fado in January. The Union seems to think an event is a rousing success simply if a venue looks really full. That’s easy to do if you’re consistently using undersized venues. I like the ideas of issuing free tickets or limiting attendance to season ticket holders. Saying space is limited isn’t an excuse when you know going in the space is way too small. There are other places where these events can be held.

You are kidding, right?

I’m a bit surprised by the nanny-state mentality of the complaint “Unfortunately, the team did not make any suggestions on how early fans should try to arrive.” Come on – if it’s a meet & greet you should plan on at least 2 hours to ensure you get in. Put on your big boy/girl pants and get over it. The Union doesn’t have to do this and I am grateful for any chance to interact with the management and players. And don’t worry about missing out on food & drink as it wasn’t free – $9 for Boddington, $7 for bottled beer and $7 for food.

Normally I’d agree with you, but it’s kinda hard to make that argument on a Wednesday, you’re suggesting that people get there two hours early, that would be 5 PM on a work day. That’s not exactly realistic…

Wow.

2 hours before a 7pm event on a weeknight? Assuming the average person works 9-5:30pm on a weeknight and has to drive to get to Chester, how realistic is that? I get it that people can take off work or take a half day, but there wasn’t really any indication from the team that those measures were necessary. I could completely understand why someone would be disappointed that they couldn’t get in after getting to the event 20 minutes early.

I’m sure next season they’ll work out a better system for this.

Anyone know why people were just seated in the stadium club? Wouldn’t have made more sense for the players to be seated at tables, and fans ushered through the club in line? The fans who got there early could leave early, and the fans waiting outside would eventually get to meet all of the same players.

I also saw the suggestion of a free ticket system. That was also a very good idea. If I were planning it, I’d do a free ticket presale to ST holders. If it didn’t fill up, then I’d open it up. Then again, if you just filed everyone through instead of seating people, everyone would get a chance to meet the players.

I’m sure next season they’ll get it right now that they know how popular this event would be.

Complain Much?

This article is jaded because the writer only met 8 players and didn’t get into the Club. What??

It is a meet and greet. It’s a simple, first-come first-serve event. They had players in all places, but I would venture to say that because of fire hazards that there is a maximum capacity in the Union Store and in the Club. Maybe we should consider player safety for a moment? It was insane making sure players could even move around in the Club. If there were more people up there, it would have been worse.

Honestly, I think people should be thankful that they are able to get this close to our team that we love and adore. Most teams don’t do this kind of thing and most players aren’t as open to it as our roster. For it being during a weekday, when would you like it? On the weekend? They’re traveling, playing and practicing, getting ready to win. Matter of fact they were practicing up until about a couple of hours before the M&G started. Also, having a ticketing system adds expense and overhead. How do you read the tickets, make sure they are valid and so on. That costs money and I am sure STH would not want any additional increase in the cost of their tickets.

We were there after 6pm and got in upstairs. Once upstairs it was a typical meet and greet. We didn’t get to everyone either, not even Califf before he was sweeped away to be downstairs. It was fine.

Get over it. The Union did a great thing for the fans and if we expected to be one of 200 people there, I am glad that we weren’t. It was great to see such a strong and supportive fan base for this 2nd year team.

Thank you to The Union. Let’s have a great game on Saturday!

exactly, you admit you were lucky and thankful they sent people down to the store, yet wrote a whole article whining and complaining about it.

by OfeyDofey on Mar 24, 2011 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks to everyone for your comments. The intention of the article wasn’t to “whine” or “complain,” but to point out some mishaps in the organization of the event, and propose some alternatives that would have been favorable to ALL fans, not just the ones that actually got into the event. It seems the comments that feel this article “whines” come from people that did in fact get in.

And the argument that a free ticket system would create “expense and overhead” seems odd; there isn’t much cost in having fans print a ticket at their home and using a simple barcode scanner to verify its authenticity. Barcode scanners aren’t too expensive by my knowledge and it’s unlikely that such as system would cause “additional increase in the cost of [our] tickets.”

I didn’t go, so I have no impression of the event, but the article does come across whiney IMHO. I mean, it’s fine to point out flaws, but it seems to me that Union handled it very well – by sending players down (two sets!) to make sure that people left out didn’t walk away empty handed was a good response. I don’t see how you can really fault them not being equipped for the number of people. To be honest, they probably simply weren’t anticipating so many folks to come out on a Wed night.

Perhaps they’ll be better prepared for that number next time, but it sounds like they did they could under the circumstances and it seems a bit harsh to criticize them so harshly.

Interesting. I don’t think I came off as criticizing the team so harshly.. as it says in the article, I came away from the event satisfied. I simply felt that the team could have gone about certain things in different ways, and I know other people that were there felt the same way.

I'm with you

Like Joey, I didn’t get in to the stadium club to meet the entire team (sans the U-20s).
Unlike Joey, I only got to meet the last four players (Ruiz, Pfeffer, Migs, Califf).

Some people are missing the fact that the 100+ people left outside are upset over/complaining about the organization of the event, not the event itself. I asked a few of the officials tending to the line outside why they couldn’t/wouldn’t just cycle the crowd through the stadium club – the best, and only answer I got was "the media is up there."

  • * LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR: I am extremely happy that I was given the opportunity to meet those four players. That was a fantastic experience and I am very, very thankful to the players and the club for affording me that opportunity

And to those telling us to stop whining: NO! That "whining" is what helps the club learn from their mistakes and improve upon what is an already fantastic experience. Events made accessible to a limited number of people need to be planned out better. Tickets, free or not, are a great idea and not that difficult or cost-prohibitive – print-at-home tickets cost nothing more than a few minutes of man-power. Hell, I’d pay $5, $10, even $20 for a chance to meet the entire team, talk with them, and have pictures actually taken with them, not just leaning over a table.

BOTTOM LINE: The event was a great idea, but poorly planned overall. And people like me, Joey, and the couple in line in front of me who drove over 2 hours could not be more grateful to the players for sharing their Tuesday evenings with the fans.
