"Martinez Not Going To Be a Designated Player" ~ Nowak

Martinez not a DP ... according to Nowak in this article from the Union's website. Should be interesting to see how they're going to manage that financially. Must have a lot of allocation money to buy it down?? Any thoughts on that? I also like the Nowak mentions he's not finished with adding pieces and that "every position but keeper" is still being looked in to for improvement. I am also encouraged with the speed thats being added in Martinez and Khalfan.. Now if we could just get some tall players!

this bothers me!!!!

The purpose of a DP (as you all know) is to circumvent the salary cap. Of course, the remainder of the money must be paid by the club and not the league. So if Adu is not a DP (supposedly on books for 600k this coming year) and Martinez is not a DP or a youg DP (salary plus transfer fee) then that is signifcant cap space being eaten up by two players, who may or may not be starters. If you designated both, then Freddy would hit for 400k and Matinez would hit for 200k (as a young dp) against the cap. That would only be a 600k cap hit, which Adu is eating up alone by not designating him. I’m glad they’re adding players and support the club as a season ticket holder.

But, if they are choosing not to designate players to avoid paying the salaries out of pocket, then that is hurting the product on the field. The building sells out almost every night, parking is $20 in the PPL lots and a miller light costs almost $8. There should be plenty of money to improve the team off budget by designating players that are affecting the cap.

The U had one of the smallest sized rosters (quanity of players, not height) in the league last year. Furthermore, a good portion of those players were off budget (GA players, Home grown player and an apprecntice designation in Levi hopapu). This lack of depth certainly hurt the team in the playoff stretch and makes the team unable to compete in the U.S. Cup.

The support this team has gotten is fantastic in its short history. I just don’t want to see them hurt the squad, the product, and the fans to save money on their bottom line. Add in the fact that they now have Bimbo money, new minority owners that are mega rich, and do not have to pay for their academy (the loose affiliation of clubs under the U umbrella method is as much about saving money as it casting a wife net) and this team should have plenty of money to spend.

In closing, I wish the U would designate players to allow them to utilize the maximum amount of money available to them under the cap system as possible.

I don’t think this is how the DP/allocation money rules work. If the team buys down a player’s salary with allocation money, the cap hit is also reduced. I’m fairly certain that a player’s DP/non-DP status is determined by the cap hit (referred to as a “budget charge” on the MLS website). Therefore, the cap hits should be no higher than they would be if these players were DP’d. Not designating them simply gives the Union more roster flexibility. That said, I’m not sure why they do this if they don’t intend to bring in other players to fill the allotted DP slots.

Also, DP slots count as $335k against the cap, not $400k.

You are correct about allocation money being used to “buy down” contracts, but since allocation money is a mystery, there is no way to know how much they or have used. For arguments sake, let’s say that Adu’s contract for this year is not redueced by allocation money (which we will never know). The cap is DEFINATELY higher as a non DP. As a non DP, Adu would count 600k against the cap. As a DP Adu would count 335k (according to what you posted above). That is a signifigant difference! Remember that clubs do not pay salaries, MLS pays salaries. Unless of course the player is a DP. Not DPing them actually gives the team LESS flexibility.

If they DP’d Adu, the Union would be out of pocket 265k that the league would not pay, but they would have the money available to them under the cap. By NOT DP’ing him, then the league is on the hook for his entire slary. It just seems that the U are unwilling to go this route. This hurts the team because it limits your financial flexibility from a cap standpoint and limits the # and quality of players that you add to the roster. That 265k would go along way in finding an upgrade at LB……

21 Years Old

From ages 21-23, a Designated Player will count as a $200K hit against a team’s cap. (20 and under is $150K)

freddy doesnt qualify

The young DP rule is only applicable to players who came into the league after the rule was passed (martinez yes, Adu, No). MLS teams cannot go back an sign a pre rostered player to the new young DP rule.
