The Philadelphia Union's 2011 MLS Expansion Draft Protection List
The following are the official protected and unprotected player lists for the Philadelphia Union for the upcoming 2011 MLS Expansion Draft. The draft takes place at 2 pm on Wednesday afternoon, with the Montreal Impact selecting ten players from the 18 current MLS teams. Once a team has a player selected, that team is exempt from the remaining rounds of the Expansion Draft.
Each team was allowed to protect 11 of the players on its On and Off-budget rosters, with Generation Adidas and Home Grown Players being automatically protected.
Protected players:
Danny Califf, Brian Carroll, Gabriel Farfan, Michael Farfan, Sebastien Le Toux, Keon Daniel, Faryd Mondragon, Danny Mwanga, Roger Torres, Carlos Valdes, Sheanon Williams, Zac MacMath (Generation Adidas), Jack McInerney (Generation Adidas), Amobi Okugo (Generation Adidas), Zach Pfeffer (Home Grown Player)
Unprotected players:
Freddy Adu, Juan Diego Gonzalez, Chase Harrison, Thorne Holder, Levi Houapeu, Morgan Langley, Stefani Miglioranzi, Kyle Nakazawa, Veljko Paunovic, Ryan Richter, Joe Tait, Justin Mapp

Is There Any Way...
We can also unprotect $30k to throw in with JDG?

Seems like a pretty fair list to me.
I don’t think there is any single player on the unprotected list that we couldn’t live without, in fact, many of them I think I would rather see move along.
Joe, the reason we shout "WE ARE" and the reason the answer will always be "PENN STATE"
Well done FO
I’m very happy with the list

I completely agree
I’m actually surprised, I thought there would be several things to argue about but they actually did a decent job this time around!

Freddy should be protected
I know he hasn’t played well yet but he has loads of potential. I know he’s not likely to be taken, but why take the chance?
How can he be less desirable than a 40 year old goaltender making similarly exorbitant money?
I disagree
If your choice is between protecting a high-priced goaltender who played very well last year and a high-priced midfielder who didn’t, it makes sense (at least to me) to protect the goaltender. Goaltender is a harder position to find top quality, and Mondragon’s salary is a bit less than Adu’s. All of those combine to make Mondragon a more attractive player to Montreal.
That said, I don’t think either is going anywhere. The two most likely players to be taken, I would guess, are Nakazawa and Mapp.
I don't think the question is his talent
Its the price tag combined with the risk. But reading Ives Galarcep, it seems Novak is pretty sure that Adu won’t get picked up.

Dear Montreal,
Hi! You didn’t watch too many games last year right? You didn’t? Great. Let me introduce you to Stefani Miglioranzi. This is the man you need for any midfield position you want.
He is such a Philly favorite, we scream and cry out his name whenever he comes into the game. We have deciated a special nickname to him that the whole crowd chants. Boo! It does so warm our hearts and would make for an instant fan chant for your Impact nation.
We want to teach our front office a lesson for leaving such a player unprotected so I suggest you take him. That’ll really put them in their place. While it will be hard to see him leave. We feel his talent could be better used on another team, so we are willing to begrudingly let him go.
Think about it huh?
Sincerely,
TalonTalent
