Philadelphia Union vs. Houston Dynamo - Eastern Conference Semifinal Leg 1 - Gamethread
Two years ago this time, the Philadelphia Union had never stepped on a soccer field before. Today, they are in the MLS Cup Playoffs against an opponent they have never lost to in four games. Of course, the teams are different now so past results at this stage mean very little, but Union fans have every right to be excited right now. Not only are the Union in the playoffs, but we belong here. Eastern Conference Semifinal. Leg 1. Kickoff at PPL Park is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET.

Sloppy sloppy defense from New York Red Bulls
Also, this pitch is a disaster and as is the number of empty seats. Good grief.

Seriously
That’s a brand new stadium and the pitch is an embarrassment.
NFL lines would be better than that.

Comically bad from Rost there
Lucky he did not pay for it with a goal.

Anybody know if Robbie Keane was playing for LA? He should be back from injury some time around now…
Yes, he was in the starting line up today
Got subbed out in the 83rd minute.

Yeah and failed to convert when he was more or less standing next to the goal with the ball unmarked

That’s our Robbie. Ireland’s leading scorer, but he’s built up a collection of shocking misses over the years.
As a Liverpool fan… I know.

RBNY crowd is probably more profane than even us. Very loud YSA chants as well as several really loud “F@ck LA” chants.

Rafa Marquez clearly threw a punch. He should be banned for the next match. MLS probably doesn’t have the balls to do it, but that is blatant violent conduct.

Still don’t get why there’s no away goals rule in MLS.

I agree with TT there. Mondragon needs to slow this down a bit. No need to play that ball quick. Not a veteran move.

PPL Park is in so much better shape than Red Bull Arena was after enduring the same snow storm. The sunset in the background also makes it look real pretty.

Come on Mapp. He needed to get that pass out quicker. Le Toux made a great run and Mapp had all the time and space he needed to find him. Poor.

This game is baaad for the defense. Bunching up, leaving way too much space on the wings, no movement off the ball, and already two horror tackles. They’d better get organized before Houston start finishing their chances.
A card fest is not what I was looking forward to tonight,

who do you think comes in/out? i want to see migz come out and put another creator in the midfield. 5 in the back isn’t working
Migs for Adu would not surprise me.

Garfan I don’t think should be long for the 2nd half either. Worried about being down a goal and a man.

Conundrum for sure. But a double switch like you suggest might be in order, if the 1st half patterns persist. Looks like they need Torres up top too.

Houston Dynamo lead 2-1. 5 yellow cards thus far.

So what do we have to do now to advance?
by PhiladelphiaEagles on Oct 30, 2011 7:13 PM EDT reply actions
we have to score atleast two goals next game, 2-0 we advance, 2-1 it goes ET and then penalties i think.
Yeah, if we win by one, it’s a 30 minute extra period (15 & 15), then penalty kicks if still tied. I don’t believe the extra period is golden goal, though.
Bob.
i dont think it is, all i know is we have to score two goals, because houston scored two while away.
No away goal rule in MLS.
I think I explained it to someone earlier and accidentally said there was not. There is not an away goal rule. A goal at home = a goal on the road.

If the Union are ahead by 1 after 90 minutes in Houston , we have extra time. If tied after that, PKs.
If the Union are ahead by 2 or more after 90 minutes in Houston, Union advance.
Any other result after 90 minutes, Houston Dynamo advance.
