Sloppy sloppy defense from New York Red Bulls

Also, this pitch is a disaster and as is the number of empty seats. Good grief.

Seriously

That’s a brand new stadium and the pitch is an embarrassment.

NFL lines would be better than that.

Rafa Marquez clearly threw a punch. He should be banned for the next match. MLS probably doesn’t have the balls to do it, but that is blatant violent conduct.

This game is baaad for the defense. Bunching up, leaving way too much space on the wings, no movement off the ball, and already two horror tackles. They’d better get organized before Houston start finishing their chances.

by Shane Wensel on Oct 30, 2011 5:44 PM EDT reply actions

Nah they’re playing compact, very comfortable except for set pieces and Farfan at left back. Houston midfield looks far more suspect, and their central defenders are ropey, Mwanga and Le Toux have too much pace and size for them

Apparently you no longer need to touch the ball for a tackle to be “clean”

yeah went through his legs and never touched it, but hard to see the from ref’s angle.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

True, ref didn’t have a good view of it, and it was clear the intent was to go for the ball. It’s just a highly risky play that turned out well for Dynamo.

And to think, this is only Leg 1.

Win by 2 in Houston

Bob.

by The Dark on Oct 30, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

we have to score atleast two goals next game, 2-0 we advance, 2-1 it goes ET and then penalties i think.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, if we win by one, it’s a 30 minute extra period (15 & 15), then penalty kicks if still tied. I don’t believe the extra period is golden goal, though.

Bob.

by The Dark on Oct 30, 2011 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think it is, all i know is we have to score two goals, because houston scored two while away.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Technically we don’t If Union are ahead 1-0 after 90, it goes to extra time.

No away goal rule in MLS.

I think I explained it to someone earlier and accidentally said there was not. There is not an away goal rule. A goal at home = a goal on the road.

Well, if they’d stop changing the rules, maybe we’d remember them…

Bob.

by The Dark on Oct 30, 2011 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

ah ok, i thought i heard they had the away goal rule, now i dont feel that bad, since we dont have to score two goals next game.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If the Union are ahead by 1 after 90 minutes in Houston , we have extra time. If tied after that, PKs.

If the Union are ahead by 2 or more after 90 minutes in Houston, Union advance.

Any other result after 90 minutes, Houston Dynamo advance.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn. I only watched the last 15 minutes (i had work) but that game was INTENSE

by ColeStevens on Oct 30, 2011 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

if we didn’t come out so compact, and defensive in the first half, we could have controlled this whole game.

by Rhayes on Oct 30, 2011 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

I agree, the first half strategy backfired.
